Finbarr's is the best restaurant in Durham. Although the city isn't particularly known for its culinary scene, Finbarr's would hold its own anywhere. The food is fantastic—well-prepared and paired with a great wine list. The wild game and duck are excellent, and the local seafood and the delicious haggis Scotch egg are a must-try. For dessert, the soufflé and mousse are simply delightful. The bread is also very good. While the service was a bit inconsistent—one waitress seemed to be having an off day, but she warmed up by the evening—it didn't take away from the overall experience. We definitely plan to return.

We were a party of 9 at a work Christmas Dinner and were very well looked after. Restaurant is gorgeous inside, very elegant. The bar was cosy (a little too warm at one point with 9 of us, but we had fun). Drinks are reasonably priced for a place like this. Service was friendly and efficient (especially the lady looking after us in the room upstairs). Food was delicious steaks were perfectly cooked, chips crisp and desserts tasty. Cheese croquettes could serve a couple instead of one. Steak could be accompanied by a few more fries too (the fish cakes got lots though). Great meal overall and excellent service.
