This is my favorite bakery in NYC. I always order cakes from here for special occasions! I find American bakeries are often too sweet, but this is perfect. Even my family, who are often picky about cakes, enjoy this place. They also have such a variety of cakes to choose from if you call ahead and order a few days in advance. The passionfruit and mango cheesecake, Kyoto matcha mousse, gateau au chocolat, and Belgian chocolate cake have all been instant favorites. Updated review: still good! Still a trusty lunch spot in the area. I can count on this place to have good food to quickly takeaway. Line moves quickly if there is one. Old review: Although not as trendy as other Japanese bakeries in the city, Takahachi has really good products, from lunch salads and sandwiches to breads to cakes. I've often picked up a few things to make my own lunch set. The soft bread loaves are also good to have on hand at the office for a last-minute breakfast or snack. Cakes are easy to pick up on the day of, and they're happy to write a message on a rectangle of chocolate to put on the cake.
I tried their matcha crepe and some sort of red bean bun a few years ago and didn 't like both. The crepe lacked matcha flavor and almost tasted like nothing. The bun was too sweet. Recently I got a matcha mousse cake and a raspberry cake cassis noir for a birthday party. Both tasted so good! Strong flavor of matcha/rasberry. Perfect balance between sweetness and bitterness/sweetness and tartness. I like that they are not too sweet. Everyone in the party enjoyed it.
Wonderful pastries and easy lunches. Unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. When someone in wheelchair needed access out front, they asked if I could grab a staff person. I told the staff someone in wheelchair needed assistance accessing the bakery, and they told me “no..” and hesitated to go communicate with the prospective customer. Unsweetened matcha latte $6 with tax. Alternative soy milk, almond, 2%, half and half. Lots of baked matcha pastries to match the matcha with matcha Match crepes, matcha parfait, matcha croissant. Even if you ask nicely for the special today, No Soup for you!
Great for lunch or snack. Very fresh delicious food. Scratch made right there, cute window to see into the kitchen and watch the bakers. Friendly staff that take pride in their business. Limited seating but comfortable.
Love this absolute gem. Grab some fresh Japanese pastry like beef Patty unbelievably tasty I highly recommend. Chai latte out the door unbelievably fast. Great clean shop tucked away downtown.

The price for the portion sizes is not suited. Most small items were 6-8$ and the cakes close to 40$ but they are tiny.
