We went directly to the restaurant, as we were hungry and look forward to a... big cheese meal. It was a warm and sunny day, so we sat outside, there are many tables. Its a great Stop on the plan of a day trip. Especially cool is to witness the creation of Cheese. Not to mention the excellent cheese dishes ! Cheese salad etc. Very idyllic setting with great view to the mountains. Excellent choice after an Santis...mountain excursion (that 's where we Highly recommend the Brunches with Original Folk Music and a breath taking view.
Nice to see the production of the cheese but don't ever eat outside in summer: too many bees!! Maybe I am a little paranoid on the subject but you really can't stay outside drinking a beer while bees try to drink from your own bottle...too. I was obliged to escape from them and go eating elsewhere :

We went to the traditional restaurant, upstairs, rebuilt after a fire say 15 years ago, and the food was piping hot and delicious try the cheese soup! We also watched the baker at work, and the cheese being made. A memorable Sunday lunchtime trip!

Interesting visit into how the famous Appenzeller cheese is made and produced. We were treated to some fine sampling and had the opportunity to taste some freshly made cheese. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
The factory is located in Stein. The tour is very informative and flowing. You also get some cheese and herb samples. There is also a shop and a restaurant.
