We decided to break our long drive back to the UK from Haut-Médoc with an overnight in the delightful town of Alençon, and decided on this little restaurant as it was one of only a few open on a Sunday night. It was a fortuitous choice! What a friendly welcome, and a glorious choice of galettes for the main course, and crêpes for dessert... I had a delightful combination of steack haché and foie gras for my main course, followed by a wonderfully indulgent apple and flaming calvados crêpe. Truly outstanding food, at a ridiculously low price for the quality. Lovely rustic ambience, too. Not to mention the background music... the incomparable Breton folk musician Dan ar Braz! Pourquoi j’aime La Belle France: An absolutely delicious supper in a crêperie in Alençon. No buggering about (ie ‘cheffed up) about this. Chef patron is en pleine vue. His partner is the Maitresse d’hôtel. Pure passion, flair and good commercial sense. Unexpectedly one of the best, and best value, meals I’ve had in France. Salad with gésiers and foie gras followed by Margret de canard with the most delicate Camembert sauce. The pommes nouvelles sautées fried in Normandy butter were sublime. We used to go to La Chandelle until it changed hands but we tried Au Colibri as it was open on Sunday. Well worth a visit. Good food and great value. 50 Euro for salad, galette, desert, coffee and 2 beers each for 2 people. We managed very easily with our restaurant French and the ambience was good.

I have known this crêperie for years and I welcome the few changes that they have recently made regarding the decoration of the restaurant.lovely galettes with local food, good local cidre, friendly service and good value for money. It is also one of the very few places open for Sunday lunch!!
