Without doubt Auberge de Layotte is a fun place to go and an experience but its definitely not haute cuisine and I cannot say I liked the food that much. It claims to be serving the kind of food people eat in the Perigord Noir...before the tourists came and that may well be true. There is no menu, you eat what you are given accompanied by a strange tasting sweet home made apperitif, fairly crude litre of red wine and some home made digestifs. We sat at a long table with pretty china in a covered area that was quite dark lit with lanterns although outside it was still light. We started with a thin vegetable soup that was just about ok, followed by home cured ham and sanglier pate with butter...

We followed a friend's car who knew how to go to this auberge/restaurant tucked deep in the woods. We had to go slowly through the narrow streets of a magical hamlet. Arrived at the parking and a short walk to the restaurant with a...lovely pond below surrounded by lush greenery and late summer flowers. I think this set the atmosphere of the evening. Comfortable, warm rusticity seemed to be the decor as we sat in a long table rerserved for the of us. There was no menu and you will be served food that was obviously organic. There was a surprising dandelion wine in a big jug. Nettle soup was followed by rillettes, pâté, slices of magret and an excellent foie gras as a large jug of red wine als...
On the advice of a Dutch friend we booked for three people on a Thursday evening. Arriving at we were the first there and were very impressed that the chef himself welcomed us before personally checking our Covid certificates!! The set menu was an...absolute delight with highlights, too numerous to mention, on each course. The beautifully cooked, simple fare reflected the skill and the quirkiness of the chef's approach to very local produce that he takes an obvious delight in preparing. The three waiters were very friendly and ultra efficient and we really appreciated their efforts to explain the courses on offer in English. On leaving, we noted that we were the only non French' car in the c...
This restaurant is so out of the way and hidden, that you wonder whether or not you came to the right place until you stand in front of it! The place is most unusual and reminds you of the cottages in fairytales. The decor is...rustic and unusual. You have to make a reservation to go there a) to be sure it is open and b) to be sure you find a place. It is often packed! Régis, the owner, host and chef, is always smiling and telling jokes and stories. His menu is simple: you have no choice! It varies only slightly according to the season but everything is home made from fresh ingredients and super delicious. You can eat and drink (water and wine) as much as you can but when people go there for... Book a table now
We were advised to go here by the owners of the Gite that we were staying in nearby. It was such a great place. The restaurant setting inside and out were great and the food was amazing! He makes everything from things he's found from...the land or killed himself. The violet wine was gorgeous and I could have drank way too much of it, wasn't so sure of the insects so left the, for my husband! It was definitely as described, the portions are generous and you will not leave hungry, in fact, you may not need to eat for the next few days after!
We enjoyed the meal and the ambience so much that we booked a second visit! Both the food and the very friendly service were truly excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. The chef offers good country fare, nothing fancy. The helpings are incredibly generous...and the price also includes an aperitif, plenty of decent wine and a liqueur fortunately we were staying within walking distance of the Auberge. Be aware that you are offered a set menu with no choice, (which was fine for us) but it would not suit vegetarians.
We drove for about an hour to reach this place and boy, was it worth it. The restaurant itself can best be described as quirky with very affable owners. The food is simply wonderful with course after course, all offering a unique take on paysan...cooking. The restaurant features a fixed price menu which covers not only the five very ample courses but also includes aperitifs, all the wine you can drink, digestifs, coffee and eau de vit to conclude. A unique experience but one where you need to pace yourself.
Imagine you are starving in this might pass muster. Otherwise expect the most basic, awful food you have seen. I would opt for McDonalds (which I don’t like that much) in preference every single day of the week. Polite and charming service, but expect...prisoner feast food/gruel on hard benches. I would give five stars for this restaurant if it was for my dog or cat. The atmosphere – take it or leave it – is wonderfully eccentric and experience in itself.
I didn’t actually care much for the food. But it’s an enchanting setting in the forest so worth a visit
