This is a rather make-shift stall located between two backpacker establishments near the top end of the Esplanade. Its appearance is akin to a warung – an Indonesian street food stall. My wife and I lunched here on Monday 24th July 2017. The ladies serving that day seemed friendly. We ordered a beef rendang with rice and sate chicken on fried rice. The rendang was spicy and well seasoned. The chilli sambal that came with the dish was stingingly hot. The dish came with salad and pickles. The four sticks of sate were quite delicious and the peanut sauce tasted just right with the correct amount of spiciness and sweetness. The fried rice was palatable, though slightly mushy. The dish came with...

The owner is very nice and chatty. The food all sounded great but my rice was mushy, and the chicken had a weird taste. Spice levels are higher than expected. I asked for a 3 and my mouth was burning. I normally eat spicy foods. This "3" was more like a "9". My friend ordered NO SPICE, but the dish was spicy. Our order took almost 40 minutes to be done. Long time to wait when there was no line late at night. The venue is a dive, but the prices are much higher than typical dives, even in a tourist area. Seating was outdoors - hot and humid. I like trying new exotic foods. This was an interesting experience but I wouldn't revisit it.
My husband and I had lunch here last weekend. I had looked on line at the menu beforehand but it must be quite dated as all the food items were at least a few dollars dearer then advertised on the website. The first two items we ordered were unavailable so we settled on a gadogado and a fried noodles. The noodles were nice and the flavour of the gadogado was great but unfortunately it was missing both the potatoes and the crackers that it was supposed to come with. Overall, it was a nice lunch and I would eat there again, but in a city like Cairns where there are so many places to eat l wouldn't rush back.
tl;dr:, Delicious and highly affordableMalay cooking and good Indonesian food are surprisingly difficult to come by in Brisbane, so I was delighted to discover Bagus in Cairns. This is Indonesian warung-style food, and while the menu is not very big, what is there is done well. The Malaysian in me was happy, the spice lover in the boyfriend was happy, plus the boss is one of the most cheerful people I'd met.My only complaint is that the sambal isn't spicy enough, but looking around me at the number of people that have left it alone, I can understand why the heat was tuned down. I ordered vegie fried noodles with seafood which costs around 14-15aud. You can see from the photo, there was almost no vegetable at all, I barely see a piece so how come it's called vegies noodle? Well, taste normal, I prefer Indomie instant noodles (which I can buy from Coles). One notice is that I ordered mild level of spicy but it's already very spicy so you may consider your appropriate level.
We were staying in a hotel on the Esplanade very close to the Bagus Cafe. We, a group of 4 adults - decided to have takeaway from Bagus. The food was nice - bit HOT for my liking, but others in our group enjoyed it. The tables at the cafe were all full, so this had to be a good sign. Just a small place with not a lot room. The man serving was a happy, jovial character.
Quite an unassuming little restaurant with a lovely man operating the front of house. The food was delicious and I would recommend this resturant to anyone and everyone
