I meticulously researched the place and thought it would be a good spot to spent the evening. What a grab in the bucket. My gut feeling proved me right when we were greeted by the very unpleasant waitress who obviously just wanted to get rid of us. She never even looked at us. The reserved seating was bad, like literally the cats table, even though I reserved a quiet spot. The drinks an old fashioned and a Negroni were so watered down I sometimes confused them with my actual water. The food was abysmal. The fish and chips consisted of 3 tender sized fish bites. We had a last minute group of 8 and a kiddo, and they were very accommodating to have us without reservation. The food was delicious and generously portioned. Come hungry! I had the James Joyce burger which had a perfect sunny side egg on top. The meat is well seasoned, but might not be a kid's favorite. Chicken nuggets are homemade. My wife had the seasonal penne with arribiata spicy sauce and bacon, which tasted great. My mother had the chili shrimp, which had around 8 shrimp and a bowl of bread for little open face sandwiches. This is an absolute gem. The food was superb: I had the beef tartare and the chili shrimps which were cooked to perfection with great taste, this with impeccable, friendly service. I’ve been to Zurich many times and am thrilled to have finally discovered this place. Will definitely return again on my next trip. Do take a moment to read the booklet on the history of the pub and on James Joyce himself, who lived in Zurich for many years and is buried there. It also overviews many of his best writings, including ‘Ulysses’ and ‘Finnegans Wake’.
