I came here brimming with high expectations and a Pulsd deal for an appetizer, two entrees, and drinks. I was so excited to try Bunker 's version of cha ca la vong (fish with dill, turmeric, vermicelli, peanuts, and basil), but it was a bit disappointing. The fish itself was perfectly cooked, crispy outside and tender and flaky inside, but the dish as a whole was kind of bland. It was better once I doused everything with two servings of fish sauce. I still haven 't found anything close to the cha ca la vong I had in Hanoi, but the search continues. As for the other items, the crab spring rolls were delicious, but you could 've removed the word crab and I think they 'd taste exactly the same....

Early evening on a Sunday was a perfect time to stop by this unassuming restaurant. Large outdoor seating area in the back with strong) heat lamps scattered throughout during the winter season. Straightforward menu categorized by pho, banh mi, buns, mains, starters, and drinks. Decided on the Chicken Coconut Curry $19) to go along with the Bunker Toddy $13). I went to Bunker a few years ago when they were located in an industrial park on Metropolitan. Now they 've moved to a new industrial park! But in any case I appreciate the expert vegan renditions of dishes from a cuisine that can often prove frustratingly unwelcoming if meat and seafood aren 't options. The vegetarian pancake to start was delicious a mix of what tasted like chives and other mixed vegetables in a melange of chewy and crisp textures. The vegetarian bun (a vermicelli noodle salad) was good, with well seasoned garlicky eggplant and zucchini, but with fewer vegetables than I had hoped. Given the volume of noodles, the dish required a healthy dose of hot sauce to really sing.

The surf and turf remains awesome. My opinion of that does not change. However, having eaten the pho for the first time... this has got to be the absolutely WORST pho I've ever had. Having eaten many pho's in NY, Vietnam and around the globe Bunker's version has got to be the worst. The flavor is off, it tastes weird and for $22, you got to be kidding me. Luckily, everything else is decent. I also don't understand $14 summer rolls. Wtf. The banh mi is okay. I tried the crispy fish and it wasn't bad. The roll was soft yet crispy. Unfortunately everything else fell short of spectacular. If you're there, just get the surf and turf. It's what they do best.
Spring rolls great, smoked meat or sausage Chinese broccoli good flavor, but mostly stem Pasture raised Chicken coconut curry bland, chicken rubbery Lemongrass pork chop interesting grill/smokiness. Thick cut chop was an odd move. Based on older yelp pics it looks like they used to do thin cut chops like most Vietnamese restaurants. In general, seems like the kind of place that used to be really good but is just coasting on past glory at this point. In fairness, this was a delivery order. As you may have heard me remark in the past, I don 't crave Vietnamese food. But when it 's good, it 's like super good. And what I DO appreciate about this genre is sometimes even when it 's cheap it can taste like it came out of a 3-michelin star kitchen. Conversely... Sometimes even when it 's really expensive and supposed to be elevated gourmet it tastes like it 's from the wrong end of the night market. I think that 's what happened here. We loved their pancake... but everything else was just OK- which means it was not OK for the price. Capiche? You feel me?
Before COVID-19: Bunker is that cool spot in Brooklyn that you want to take your friends to for some modern Viet food. The restaurant is a hidden gem but locals know what's up as its been in the neighborhood for years. The restaurant itself is beautiful, large, and rustic with a modern hipster vibe. It was a bit out of the way in BK but a fun place to go out on a date or with friends, especially at night for a drink. The bánh xèo was my favorite here and the tapioca pudding as well. Id give it a 4.5 but Yelp doesn't allow that. Still a solid place a year later. I'm happy they held up through the pandemic. This time I made reservations for a group of 4 of my girlfriends. We got here around 7:15p and were seated relatively quickly. The staff here is really nice. Our waiter, Alex, was very accommodating with my drink requests (I was very particular haha). The only con was that service was a bit slow. Aside from that food tasted fresh. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Super chill vibe.
