Old Town Cartagena is a mishmash labarynth of shops, bars, churches, plazas and government buildings with much of the 300-year building. It is a great walk even in the near equatorial heat of the coastal city. At some point, whether you follow the pretty taxis, tourist groups, or randomly land in a large area (Santo Domingo) dominated by outdoor cafés. Milenio Catagena is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. The menu, although extensive is a bit hard to find, and the servers are hardly controversial. Located in the Plaza de Santo Domingo next to the Botero statue, this cafe served good food and cold beer in a great setting. The Pollo con Coco was excellent, but the bread wasn't that good and the arroz con coco was pedestrian. The dessert was some Wal Mart quality pie that detracted from the entire meal. Also the street vendors pester the bejesus out of you, be ready to say no gracias 50 times before your entree arrives. Still it was a great place for a beer.

It is a top tourist trap, like all cafes and restaurants in the Sto Domingo square. They pay exorbitant prices for mediocre food. If you go to the small streets that are away from the place, you will find much better restaurants at the same (or even lower) price. It's a shame that this is happening, so just maneuvers around the square and don't let it spoil your stay in this beautiful city.

This is the best option on Santo Domingo Plaza. We had a great time in Cartagena and loved ending the day with great food at this colorful venue. As South Africans we prefer outdoor venues. I travelled with two teenage girls who had ended an 8 week exchange in Bogota. The staff were happy to make a pasta dish off the menu to satisfy a craving for a homesick teenager. We would love to return
