We had not been to Chez Denis for years since we had been skiing elsewhere but made a beeline for it upon returning to Chatel: we were not disappointed! The place has not changed a bit and is sill the same welcoming atmospheric rustic cabin...on the edge of the Plaine Dranse area. The food is all local with the traditional Savoie/Haute Savoie cheese dishes dominating the menu (although there are soups, sausage with cabbage, omelettes etc also My daughter had the local variant of a tartiflette (with the owner's own Abondance cheese and three of us shared a meat platter with reblochonnade (a charcoal fired oven placed on the table in which you cook reblochon cheese on mini-frying pans before p...
Firstly, I would not only recommend this restaurant for its character but also the fact that you're supporting a local farmer who can point out his cows to you on the hill. We really enjoyed this restaurant it had a real personality to it:...the farmer was warm and friendly, the interior was full of traditional French farming objects and the view was incredible. The drinks were reasonably priced compared to other cafes in the area. Despite the farmer speaking little English he tried his best to answer our questions about the local area. The highlight was seeing his milking area at the back of the restaurant and watching them bring the cows in later on in the summer evening.
Exactly what we were hoping for a fabulous experience for our large group of people everyone left having had a wonderful meal at a very reasonable price. My fondue and salad simple perfection, a highlight of my holiday and service friendly...and efficient. Our table was next to the open kitchen and it was wonderful to see it all being cooked to order and fresh. Everything you could hope for in a mountain restaurant and excellent value. Can't wait to return one day.
Booking is definitely advisable for this gem. The cheese is made on site with milk from his cows who graze here in the summer. A refreshingly simple menu with very reasonable prices all served in very convivial atmosphere. The place was packed for lunch The only English voices were ours....

Very good food for mountain lunch whilst skiing. Excellent tartiflette comes in large dishes if you are sharing and there's very generous portions. Although our group had booked we still had to wait for our table but the restaurant was full.
Great place Denis and his wife work hard and produce some authentic dishes. No chips pasta or burgers here. Fondue, Berthoud and Reblochonnade however are highly recommended. If you want a real experience go here.
eat here twice, fabulous atmosphere, proper eating, great service. warm and cozy, one must visit. all dishes are traditional, good selection of dressed, and homemade beautiful cake for pud!
The food was just fantastic. Simple but perfectly served. Great location, lovely views, service a bit slow but who cares? It was great.
