We made reservations here in advance of our trip to Halifax because it was supposed to be a really good special occasion restaurant. Found the service a little lacking at the start although the server did manage to make it better as the dinner went on. But honestly, an upscale restaurant like this one shouldn't have issues when it comes to serving drinks and not having it take 20 minutes for those drinks to arrive. Also found the room uncomfortably warm.The dinners were just ok. Nothing special about any of the 3 appetizers we ordered. One was the special for the evening but it was not as described. Venison carpaccio pretty good. Scallops and pork decent but nothing exciting. Paella had mediocre flavor but good amount of seafood (lobster, mussels, halibut). Service inconsistent. Pierogies were delicious, fried with squash. Burger was okay, parmesan fries delicious. Smoked chowder had odd preserved scallops. Swordfish and gnocci was good but didn't care for the swordfish texture not sure if it was supposed to be like that. Caramel ice cream was put on top of whipped cream which curdled the cream.
I ate here for a friends birthday and It was the best meal we’ve ever had in Halifax hands down!!! I also have Crohn’s disease and am 6+ months pregnant. I have limited diet restrictions and they went above and beyond for me and my meal was amazing!! I felt so cared for and my meal wasn’t bland or boring. The chefs and staff were so kind I was Blown away, I really enjoyed myself and can’t wait to go back!
Great restaurant! We dined here and enjoyed it from start to finish. We had a great waiter and enjoyed every bite of our dinners (including app's and dessert). It is in a lovely setting and for the food and presentation a very reasonable price. We enjoyed it so much, we had lunch at their sister restaurant "2 Doors Down", the next day. Arrived in Halifax and walked to Chives from our hotel. You walk up a few stairs and enter hip cool space with framed mirrors and banquets. Staff is warm, friendly and informative. Started with sublime seafood chowder, burrata and the tart followed by lobster risotto. Finished with the triple layer ganache cake . Each dish prepared beautifully with the freshest ingredients. Highly recommend.
From the outside Chives isn't the most attractive place in town but once up the stairs a well laid out and inviting restaurant with a good feel about the place. Service was excellent with good descriptions of the Specials not on the menu and good recommendations for the beers and wine. Food was excellent to say the least, and definitely deserves the Hype!!
I recently dined here with 2 other couples and a teen. We ordered at least one of everything on the app menu and it was all delicious. Seafood chowder was the best I've had in recent memory. Service was excellent as well and prices reasonable. This will be a regular stop on Nova Scotia vacations from now on.
Well if you like five star dining and expect a level of service and cleanliness along with amazing food this place is for you. It was a great way to end our stay in Halifax and I felt so blessed to be treated to such amazing food with great service that I wouldn't hesitate to go back. Book a table now
Very nice experience. Well thought out menu, good selections. Waiter was excellent, food was fresh and well seasoned. Nice atmosphere, soft music. People at surrounding tables seemed as well pleased as we were.
