Cru is sort of hard to find, but you will be glad you did. Be forewarned, if you choose to eat on the patio, you are across the street from carriage/horse stables. With that said, this is a funky little place in an old house down by the market. It has an open kitchen, which is always a plus, and the staff seemed to be having fun and enjoying each other’s company. The tomato and mozzarella appetizer was well-presented. The tomatoes were obviously fresh, and the mozzarella was a higher grade. Both were solid, but the dish could have used a little basil…admittedly I am a bit of a basil nut on tomatoes in the summer. Read some good reviews, so decided to give Cru Cafe a whirl.... so glad we did!! They close for dinner prep at 3pm, and we arrived at 2:30... no problem. Our waitress, Emily, was super cool, and chatted with us, answering my questions about the history of the place while she prepped the dining room (we were the last people inside). The food was absolutely delicious! I ordered the Ginger Glazed Salmon, and added the fried onions from my daughter's Roast Beef Sandwich to my salad... best food we had while in Savannah and Charleston! My favorite part of our visit to Cru Cafe had everything to do with the staff... they were just having a great time interacting with eachother, and it was not unco...
I absolutely adore Cru Café. This restaurant is hidden away and not overly crowded with tourists. Located in what appears to be a typical Charleston house, the restaurant has both an upstairs and downstairs area, as well as a wrap-around porch for dining. My group and I chose to sit in the upstairs room and it was lovely. French doors opened up to the patio, allowing us to enjoy the sunset and a cool breeze. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. If you happen to come across this restaurant, I highly recommend dining here without hesitation.
We had the pork schnitzel which had a lemon cape cream sauce pasta that rocked my world! So, so delicious! We also had the grilled basil shrimp. It was very good! The small plate of vibe ripe tomato and mozzarella.... was anything but ripe. It had thick cuts of tomato but it was very firm and very disappointing, considering it is summer and ripe tomatoes abound. I would definitely return here but just not order the tomato dish. The food at this restaurant was absolutely delicious and the service was exceptional. We tried the smoked salmon appetizer, fried chicken mozzarella, and the pork schnitzel, all of which were fantastic. We had dinner and the price per person ranged from $50 to $100. The food, service, and atmosphere all received a perfect score of 5. We highly recommend trying the pork schnitzel.
