Handily situated just outside the station, this venerable old barn of a pub has been fashionably modernised in a pleasingly minimalist way, and wouldn't look out of place in far more trendier locations than this unlikely east end outpost. Barely anybody in when we called in one weekday lunchtime. Certainly plenty of room in the large front bar and even more so at the rear which seemed more geared up for events or multi-dining. We were here for a spot of lunch, and the abbreviated but interesting menu certainly had appeal. We played it rather safe with the classic cheese and bacon burger but were not disappointed. Faultless burger and tasty relish plus ample more-ish fries were just the job....

I’d decided I needed to treat myself to a proper Sunday Roast not having had one for a while. After getting no luck with a few attempts I was able to book one at Forest Tavern in Forest Gate a mere10 minutes walk away. What a good choice!! Excellent meal to be honest I really didn’t need the additional Cauliflower Cheese, although I have to say it was excellent as was the rest of the meal. Delicious roast beef, with roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, creamed leeks and cabbage, home made Yorkshire pudding and quite superb gravy…all for the very reasonable £16.50. I was also tempted by the afire mentioned Cauliflower Cheese at a further £4 A bottle of Argentinian Malbec at £24 completed the ex...

A positive from lockdown is that this pub had been taken over by a new operator who has put a lot of love into it in terms of the appearance, team and kitchen generally raising the bar. The service has been absolutely amazing every time I’ve been in and finally had a chance to dine here with friends. The food is really fantastic pub food executed incredibly well. The chorizo scotch eggs were gorgeous, the fish chips and Sausage Mash dome really well and the roast pork my wife had was awesome. I regret not coming here sooner and suggest that anyone in the area give it a whirl.

A lovely place after the refurb, good food and excellent staff, which remains the case. Unfortunately it’s now been taken over by the kind of selfish parents who think it’s their front room and that everyone should make allowances for their badly behaved kids. Couldn’t even stay for lunch at 2pm on a Friday as it was like a crèche. Shame, as I shall miss the place and it’s not the (excellent) staff’s fault. Book a table now

No booking for a recent Sunday but despite being busy we were found a table. Meal took a while to arrive but we cannot fault the welcome service. The beer was not to my taste but that’s life. Our roast beef and the belly of pork were very nice, decent portions, very tasty. Dog friendly which is nice. Could do with a water bowl and a few treats to add to the experience. We will return, thank you.

This is a really nice, dog friendly pub. We visited after our walk with the dog. Ordered Eggs Royal (poached eggs, salmon, hollandaise) and the wife a veggie omlette. Even though there were only 6 or 7 couples here, the food took pretty close to an hour to arrive. Only eggs !!! Everything else is on point and the **** Mary went down excellently. Speed up please..

the offer of beer here are very good, good selection of non-commercial, running the mill consumer muck. prices are what they would expect from a craft pub, so there are no beats. however service very slow and not very welcoming when considering that it is economical with customers. I would recommend people who like a better choice of beer.

Very delicious Sunday roast, everything was freshly prepared, as they have an open kitchen and we saw the chefs hard at work. The beef was slightly over cooked however the pork belly was crunchy and tender in all the right places. Great service and very attentive also a lovely Sunday playlist. Book a table now

The Tav is my chosen local as the staff are absolutely lovely, great service, fantastic cheap coffee and the fish chips is bliss. It's also a great place to meet and chat which I do with a bunch of ladies several times a week. Brilliant! :
