I must confess, I don’t understand the hype for France Soir. Despite friends having many a long boozy lunch here and raving about the place, our experience was far from notable from the ‘casual’ nature of the wait staff to the lack-luster food. With the exception of a well cooked veal cutlet, this establishment would have a hard time surpassing many of the local pub feeds and at three times the price. We had booked an earlier session being informed we only had the table for an hour and a half. All good. On arrival we were some of the first patrons and rather than being greeted and shown to our table, we were asked to find our own. This we did only to then be asked to move because it has been...

I went for dinner at France Soir last night with my partner because it came highly recommended. The first thing to note is the venue is very small and very cramped. The entire evening I had waiters bumping the back of my seat and even at three quarters capacity, it was borderline uncomfortably loud. I understand the practicality of paper table clothes from the venue's point of very but when I'm paying ~$40 for a main, I don't think it's too much to ask to have linen table clothes. The waiters were brusque to the point of being rude but that's not uncommon in restaurants like this. They were only partially attentive though. After taking out order and bringing out our meals, it was extremely di...

Ok. This review is coming from someone who has ALWAYS liked AND supportedFrance-Soir. I used to go there regularly but, for unrelated reasons, Ihadn't been for ages until last Saturday night. I have a wide palette, happyto eat 2 or 3 courses, drink good/expensive wine, and spend money. But I dohope, if not expect, some reasonably accommodating service, and some quitegood food. I used to get this at France-Soir, fairly consistently. LastSaturday night was completely different. I think things have deterioratedover time plus, having been to many other quality restaurants in Melbourne, and in Europe and London, my standards and expectations have shifted. Thewaiters seemed more rude, less interest...

This is our "go to" French restaurant in Melbourne - we visit every time we come to Melbourne. Would you believe we discovered this place because it features in a crime series written by a Melbourne crime writer - we read an interview where he said it is his favourite French restaurant & he often goes there; we've never been disappointed. The waiters have a little bit of that French "surliness" but it's restrained & adds to the atmosphere. You'll see people there dressed in shorts & thongs (yes - for dinner) or dressed up to the nines - it's an eclectic crowd. Superb cellar of French wines (although they do allow BYO) to complement the excellent array of fine dining French food. We can't spe... Book a table now

Came here recently with my partner to celebrate 1 year together. I hadn't been here for many years. The restaurant was busy but we were well looked after by our waiter. The ambience, service and food was all excellent for a French restaurant. The meal from the bread and butter, the classic steak au poivre, duck with sour cherries and the profiteroles for dessert were excellent. The wine list is huge and there is something for everyone. We will be coming back.

We have visited this restaurant so may times it is our favourite in Melbourne and a hit with the locals. The food is French and delicious always, wine list extensive and the service is friendly and consistently good. Lively atmosphere as always busy, small so book ahead and try to get a window table but all are good. Lunch and dinner equally good even Christmas lunch is fantastic!

Booking was made earlier in the day for six people We arrived that night to find no booking was documented and the staff member was off duty so couldn't confirm Had to wait awhile whilst other patrons had finished their meal for a table They were very busy as it was a Saturday night and they made you feel like it was your fault

Went there for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it. French onion soup (of course being Melbourne Winter) fresh bread sticks with excellent butter followed up with an omelette that was just excellent. I have also had the spicy raw steak with an egg in it that was also easy eating. Book a table now

This is a cosy friendly French restaurant that is simply the best. You are transformed into a wonderful restaurant in regional France. The food is delicious and the whole experience memorable. We love it and will be making the pilgrimage there later in the year
