We called in here for lunch before visiting the chateau as we had noticed on an earlier visit to Amboise that there was outdoor seating in a courtyard secluded from the road, which suited us perfectly as we had the dog with us and didn't particularly want him to be spooked by all the noise and bustle. The staff were very friendly and the service pretty quick - our orders came within about 15 minutes - and they brought a bowl of water for the dog without us needing to ask. This was out 3rd visit to Amboise and we hadn't eaten in Hippeau before so thought we'd give it a try. We were in the side courtyard area which was fine, but restaurant not busy and about 9.30 when there was just us and a table of 4, the staff started clearing away and stacking up all the surrounding tables and chairs. We didn't feel that we could prolong the meal with coffee etc as the staff obviously wanted to get home!! The food was plentiful but quite average and don't think we would return.
We sat outside at this busy restaurant. The food was very poor. Not well cooked or presented. Most people were eating gourmet burgers. I had steak which was 30% fat and gristle and my partner had Duck which was over cooked. The meals were served with Dauphinoise but not made with potato and not fresh. The service was was sloppy and the waiters seemed un interested. Give this place a miss as there are so many better options. A bad memory of Amboise.
We waited an hour for our food, seated at the back of the restaurant although it was empty (presumably because we were a family), food ok but we had to send back the steak which was not cooked, we even had to wait 10 minutes to pay. No attempt to apologise or assist. PS we speak French.

This was one of the most delicious dinners we had in France. Food was quite good value for the money. They were quick. The only bad thing was one of the waitresses forgot our dessert order and didn't seem to understand English. The boss or supervisor noticed that and fixed it quickly.

Despite the many dining options in Amboise, I ate dinner here both nights during my 2 night stay. It is a cool little brasserie with simple but interesting food and drink menus, and an earnest, albeit quite busy, staff.
We ate in a small courtyard at the rear of the restaurant and it was filled with couples and families. The service was attentive and helpful. The menu was huge and we enjoyed our chosen meals.
