Juniper Cafe is a popular place with locals from Edmonton's Strathearn district (dotted with many 1940s and 1950s buildings) where the cafe is located---in a small strip mall. But people who live elsewhere in the city also seek it out because its reputation has spread.When I and two friends were there for a Saturday lunch, the place was packed with people who seemed like regulars, all greeting each other, and there was a nice mix of young and old, including kids of all ages---Juniper Cafe is very family-friendly. On weekends, it is best to make a reservation; there aren't that many tables. The staff was very welcoming, including the two owners who were busy preparing orders in the open kitch...
This was a disappointing first visit to Juniper Cafe. I had chosen this spot as a meeting place with a friend because it's known to be kid-friendly and I had a toddler in tow.When I arrived, with baby in arms, the place was busy but I noticed a few tables open. I was unsure if i had to be wait to be seated so I stood in plain view to see if someone would approach me but no one even bothered making eye contact. So I trudged further in to the bakery counter to wait for someone to acknowledge me. No one did. I had to physically interrupt two staff members talking to ask if it was self seating to which they said it was.So I walked over to the first empty table to see a "reserved" sign atop. Then...
I was asked to meet at this location for lunch. I hadn’t heard of it before and from the outside it doesn't look special. It seems like just a coffee shop with a small kids play area (great for daytime parents with small kids who want to meet). But the menu came and I was shocked to see a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Actual menu of real quality food! Service was great and friendly. Food was good. Coffee was not the best, but everything else was a great surprise. I will be going back in the future.
I was visiting family in Edmonton and we decided we would go out for dinner at Juniper. It was not very busy that evening probably because of it being a long weekend. The food was very good - the steak sandwich looked incredible, as was the soup of the day and bison shortrib main. Food is very well priced as is their small but good wine list. I had a piece of angel food cake (homemade) for dessert - served with marinated berries....lovely. Nice ambience. I must come back and try the handheld Bennie. Book a table now
You may drive by this little place and not notice it but you are missing a great experience if you don't stop in! Open for a little more than a year, this one of a kind restaurant offers up some great food in a quaint and cozy atmosphere. The menu changes because this is a farm to table type restaurant, the plates are served in a sharing or family style way, and you can expect that everything you try is nicely seasoned, prepared and beautifully presented.
Our daughter, who lives in Edmonton, chose Juniper for a dinner in which we were to meet her boyfriend's parents for the first time. Juniper turned out to be the absolute best choice as the atmosphere was uber welcoming, the staff exceptionally friendly and all meals delicious and well presented. The dinner date turned out to be so positive and memorable, large in part to the fantastic venue! I would definitely recommend!
Set in a small, out of the way strip mall, this former bar is now a cosy nieghbourhhod casually informal yet elegant restaurant. Wisely chosing to offer a limited menu, Juniper's proprieters send forth from their kitchen by way of friendly staff, interesting, tasty, savoury, and beautiful dishes for the 30 or so assembled guests.
Our brunch time visit here was pleasant and tasty. We enjoyed sharing the handheld Benny (Delish!!) and grilled cheese, with a side of focaccia. All were very good. The service was great, and it was a nice touch to have a kids corner with toys for the little ones to play in. Will definitely be back! Book a table now
Lovely little cafe nestled in Strathern community. Beautiful decor. Comfortable atmosphere. Everything is so fresh. Had the handheld Benny with bacon and the lemon aioli. Awesome! Great service. Owners are lovely. Very friendly and accomodating.
