We wanted to have leisurely family dinner before seeing the Lumieres light & sound show in Rennes. Le Bistro Volney was just right. Despite our suspect French and having one picky child in tow we had a wonderful evening. It was everything I'd expect from a French bistro...relaxed but efficient service, unpretentious quality food and wine. I had the guinea fowl which was delicious and the chocolate desserts went down well too! An added plus was being able to book a table online...so convenient when travelling abroad.
We've been to only a few restaurants in Renns, I'm pretty sure this small restaurant is one of the best. The atmosphere is quite cozy and the staff - maybe owner - was kind and helpful. There was an artist who played guitar and sang, which made it more romantic. However, the best of this restaurant is obviously food. It seemed that the chef worked on their creative menu very well. I recommend this restaurant.
Stopped for lunch and so glad we did. Friendly, comfortable feeling with terrific food to boot. The Lamb Shank cassoulet was a perfect lunch on a cold day in Renne. Also, the white fish daily special with side sauce, risotto, and beautiful sculptured squash puree was to die for. The creme brulee, 3 ways, was a creative dessert and good finish to the meal. Also, a fun and creative wine list.
A lot of imagination has gone into the menu and the results are excellent. We enjoyed a Japanese style tuna and tempora starter followed by Guinea fowl or cod, both accompanied by delicious and unusual vegetables. Despite a problem in the kitchen our server remained calm and charming. Highly recommended.

Bistro Volney is the goods! Excellent menu, dedicated service, good wine, good price. The guy who runs the place is a gem...works so hard keeping everyone happy. I'd say, come early. Even though the maitre d runs everywhere, there is only one of him..so you can wait a bit. But it is worth it.
The food and wine at Le Bistro Volney was good, but it was the service that wowed us. The staff were very kind and patience with us, and went above and beyond in their service by ordering a taxi for us when we were overwhelmed by the foreign language phone line
Nice restaurant with original dishes that mixe up traditional French cuisine and gastronomy (fried seeweeds as a seasoning). Prices are quite expensive but the food worths it. The waitress gaves us good wine advice and we spent a real good evening.
Excellent French cuisine with a modern twist, all 3 courses were superb as was the service. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys their food. I'm going back for more great food when I visit in September.
