I love the food and the price is good so I go to this little hole in the wall restaurant every time I visit Vancouver Island. If you like perogies and cabbage rolls that are authentic, this is a must go. Now for the criticisms, which are made to show just how little extra it would take to really improve the experience. 1) The owner makes the food the night before and spends her day being the waitress, cashier, and doing other business owner things simultaneously. What can you expect but that something will suffer? Spent the morning at Pyromania Pottery making Raku vases and sea stars...we were very hungry so my friend recommended this restaurant because she had enjoyed it before. I had never been. Quaint and tiny with local artwork for sale. Homey and comfortable - simple and clean. Welcomed and served promptly. Daily special offered and they made accommodation to some of my diet restrictions which was greatly appreciated.Coffee excellent and refilled. We got warmed up and enjoyed our food/ lunch together. Although they advertise Ukrainian Food, it is not . I was raised with traditional Ukrainian cooking, and this food was quite different. The Borscht had cabbage, and no beans. Generally, cabbage in Borscht is a Russian Borscht. The Cabbage rolls were huge, and had a lot of meat in them which I think were more like German Cabbage rolls. My mother made them very small, with no meat in them, but sometimes she would sprinkle a little diced bacon on top for cooking. The perogies were a little tough, as they had likely been boiled to long, and then fried.
The Little Mountain Cafe has always been a great country cafe to visit for Breakie or lunch ! ( not open for Dinner ) Good food and lots on your plate ! Sandy closed down the Cafe and has just done a complete Reno !! She will be re-opening with a whole new look and a new menu !! What that is - she won't say , you will have to show up to check it out !! I would venture to say knowing her - the food will be good and still lots on the plate too !! Book a table now
I had a late lunch at this cafe and ordered a turkey burger with a side of borscht soup. The menu has lots of Ukrainian items. Soup was delicious - had lots of veggies and flavor. The server explained that they make the turkey patty - seemed more like a grilled cutlet than a ground patty and was also delicious. It was quiet in the cafe and we had a great conversation with the server. Seemed more like a visit with long lost family!
I stopped here as it looks like a quaint little spot - thought I might find a hidden gem! SO WRONG! The service was awful from the time we walked in - one of those place that when a stranger walks in and and all the people turn an stare at you and dare you to sit down. The service was awful - food not much better. I just wanted to get as far away as possible from this place.
I had a dentist appointment in the area and stopped here for breakfast after. Cold morning like 1c so it was a bit cold inside the café . Had the loaded Omlette and a coffee . The potatoes and omlette hit the spot and I enjoyed the breakfast. Service was friendly and coffee was hot. Spoke to the owner and she is very pleasant . Overall good cafe !
We decided to have breakfast here based on the recommendations of others on TripAdvisor and were disappointed overall. No one else was there except us and another patron who the server was sitting and visiting with. The food was not great and the service was minimal. Would not return. Book a table now
When back again great food as always the food was fresh the service was fast the place was clean the regular break fast was good eggs toast ham home fries . All the food is fresh and they use local as much as possible a nice place to eat!☺
