As a specialty coffee roaster and former cafe manager, I have to say that my experience here was disappointing. The coffee quality was extremely poor, with so much of it sitting exposed in unsealed containers for months. I ordered a cortado and a flavored drip coffee, but the older staff member didn’t understand what I meant when I requested the drip coffee. tldr: Great coffee, friendly service, good food, cozy atmosphere, laptop workspace. I went with a few friends to get coffee and brunch, and Mad City Coffee was a really solid choice. I got a café au lait with a bacon egg and cheese, and it was delicious. There is plenty of indoor as well as outdoor seating, and inside is very cozy. The baristas were friendly, and there was a wide variety of coffee and food to choose from. The location of the cafe is also convenient being just West of downtown Columbia and close to HCC. They were SO helpful and friendly (I had never been there and wanted to find a good full-bodied and rich medium-dark roast whole-bean coffee to get so I’d needed some extra assistance)! I wish I could remember the name of the Barista that helped me to mention her here (Lauren, maybe? …can’t remember) but she went above and beyond in helping me to find a blend that I’d likely enjoy given my preferences and to make sure I was happy with it! Pricing was very decent as well and I ended up really liking what I got with their recommendations. Will definitely be back now!
I had high hopes because this place seems to be local, but unfortunately I left disappointed. They didn’t have an ingredient for the drink I originally wanted so I took a recommendation from the barista. I didn’t know espresso could be bland, but here we are. Half the fun of a coffee shop is the ambience and the first thing that came to mind was grimy which takes the shine off of whatever charm it had left. I’m also pretty sure keeping clear glass jars of whole coffee beans on a window sills accessible to customers is recipe for quality.

Great coffee shop, friendly service, good selection of roasts and snacks/pastries the danishes, muffins, and biscotti are enormous. Excellent lattes, reasonably quick service, baristas are friendly and welcoming. There's plenty of space to sit and work on your laptop, and the noise is not overpowering at all you will not be struggling to hear your headphones. There is music playing on the speakers for a chill vibe. Highly recommend Mad City.
Tons of different flavored beans. Would have been nice if i got what i ordered. Asked for the seasonal pumpkin spiced roast, got what i suspect what some kind of blubbery flavor. Also ordered a B-E-C breakfast sandwich, the group of 5 patrons behind me in line got their sandwiches before i reminded them about mine. I’ll go somewhere else next time I’m in the area.
The egg and cheese bagel is consistently a favorite; it's one of the best I've ever had. I'm a big latte fan and typically prefer my coffee to taste more like "milk with a hint of coffee," but Mad City might change my mind. Their iced coffee is so delicious on its own that I've been experimenting with different beans without adding any milk!
