Great Portuguese food! I took my Mom out for Sunday dinner at Mateus Place Restaurant, which is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood in Ludlow. Mateus was highly recommended by a coworker who grew up in Ludlow. This restaurant is divided with a separate lounge area with Keno, TVs, and pool table and a casual dining room with 2 TVs. The parking lot was quite full when we arrived, but upon entering, the dining room was empty, everyone was in the lounge area watching the Pats game. We could sit anywhere we wanted in the dining room. We looked over the menu which offers a good variety of Portuguese dishes including fish/seafood, chicken, steaks, prime rib, soups, appetizers, and desserts. A child...
Mateus is another very solid Portuguese restaurant in Ludlow which doubles as a sports bar during the European soccer season otherwise its baseball, basketball and or football. There is a separate dining area on the opposite of the bar area for a more comfortable quieter dining experience, if that is your wish. Soups, stews, pork, chicken, beef and seafood entrees are always very good, the service is attentive, the price point is low and the portion size is quite large. I have always been very pleased with everything I have ordered at Mateus and it will continue to be one of my regular lunch hour stops.
Went there for lunch based upon the positive reviews here. This place is definitely a community favorite but i still felt welcome despite being an outsider. I ordered the lunch special which consisted of dry rubbed bbq chicken and ribs, rice, fries, some pickled veggies (carrots, celery, etc. . All was amazing. Even the bbq sauce that they served it all with. Lunch was approximately $10 and worth every penny.
The atmosphere was a bit creepy and the food was alright. I don't think this is a place I'd return to.
