Amazing, legitimate home-cook Southern style food! They brought out every single classic Southern dish you could think of - from fried chicken to cornbread with homemade jam, sweet tea and creamed greens and more!
Come hungry because they serve a LOT of food (for a very reasonable price, too) and know that you may have to throw your diet rules out for the night because this food is worth it.
As for the atmosphere, it was perfect for somebody visiting Nashville. They had us sit at a huge round table with a bunch of other folks, so it gave us a great chance to get to know the local people and ask them questions about the area. The food is served family style. There are quite a few items, but it's just not impressive. One of the biggest disappointments is the fact that they are trying to pass Swai off as real catfish. Any true southerner ought to know that the fish served at this establishment was bogus. I would have rather eaten whiting than to be served an insult to my intelligence and to my taste buds. The best thing that I can say about the restaurant is that the staff greets you with kindness and the individuals you break bread with are kind as well.
Each time I've gone whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner I've had an excellent meal and a great time. Its family style dining so if you're not with a large group its likely you'll be seated with people you didnt come there with - but thats been okay, its just made for good conversation
The skillet chicken is a constant so you'll always have plenty of fried chicken.

Well, this is the place, family dining at the absolute best, we arrived for the afternoon, waited for a table for 45 min. and it was well worth the wait and then some....the family style seating was great for great conversations, when the food came I went for the wings again and again, everyone else went for the breasts and legs, but I got the best of the best, all of the sides were great southern dishes.

This food was amazing! My friends and I finally understand what true soul food is. Chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, vanilla wafer pudding, it doesn't get any better than Monell's. The owner, hostesses, and waiters truly embrace you with southern hospitality. Also the garden and little ponds are gorgeous. If you are in Nashville you have to make Monell's a stop :)
