We started with a few cold appetizers: Woodear mushrooms, which had a typical sour and savory flavor with a hint of garlic (8 out of 10), and cucumber, which had a similar taste but with much more garlic (also 8 out of 10). We then ordered mini lamb skewers, but I felt the portion size was too small and suggested they offer cumin for dipping, as is common in Chinese restaurants.
For our main courses, we chose two noodle dishes: sliced beef noodles and Dan Dan noodles. Unfortunately, both dishes were mediocre and lacked the flavor we were hoping for, especially the Dan Dan noodles. Our experience at Northern Cafe was very disappointing. After a meeting at UCLA, my friend and I stopped by for lunch. When we walked in to order and pay, the woman taking our order was quite rude. On top of that, she charged us each a two-dollar service fee in addition to the food price and tax, which felt like a sneaky way to collect a tip, especially since the tip jar only had a few pennies. As for the food, my friend chose the house-special beef noodle soup, and I went with the spicy beef noodle. Unfortunately, the dishes were far from what we expected.
Northern Cafe used to offer great food at reasonable prices, but recently the prices have increased across the board. On top of that, they hired new kitchen staff who are incredibly inefficient. I waited 30 minutes for a single signature noodle dish, and when I inquired, I found out the kitchen hadn’t even started preparing it! There weren’t many customers either. Once I learned this, I asked the waiter to cancel my order and left. I probably won’t return until they hire new kitchen staff.
Great meats on the sticks! I liked the gristle the best. Chicken stew over rice noodles was very addictive, so be careful. Fast, good service for affordable prices. Update: now this place has almost everything on the menu. So I tried the fish strips (misspelled as straps on the menu, haha) on the hot plate with mixed veggies, and I want more. You get what you pay for. Very thin sliced beef and raw radish. The noodles are, well, ok for a Chinese restaurant in US, but not quite authentic to me. The meat skewers are fine, but don?t expect any taste more than spices. Yeah I order the beef and lamb but I can?t tell any difference.(usually it?s very easy to tell).
Great price with delicious noddle. Recommend the tomato beef noddle soup with fried egg. The skewers and side dishes are delicious as well. Order at the cashier and they will deliver the food to your table, the space inside is comfortable and spacious, great choice for a group of friends to have meal together.
Forever in love with the Chongqing chicken, Peking meat pie, and the juicy dumplings filled with pork and crab! The food is almost always excellent, though the quality can vary slightly. Still, it remains one of the best spots for takeout or dining in Westwood.
This spicy beef noodle soup doesn't actually contain any beef at all—just a small amount of bok choy. It's completely different from the picture shown. I'm really disappointed; you don't get what you pay for. I can't believe it!
