The National Gallery of Victoria's (NGV) Great Hall's best feature is the stained glass ceiling, which produces a kaleidescope of colour. I have been fortunate enough to dine here several times, and the glass ceiling astounds me every time I visit. The glass ceiling was constructed by the late Leonard French, an artist renound for his work in glass. He is a member of the great generartion of post-war Modernists, who revolutionised Australian art..The NGV's stained glass ceiling is an abstract, but it references the elaborate stained glass windows of Europe's great Gothic cathedrals.

The Great Hall is a significant essay in glass craftsmanship. Lay on your back and see the patterns emerge in this massive glass mosaic. The colours in the stained glass are always shifting. The multi-coloured glass ceiling at the NGV is one the largest in the world. It was created by Australian glass artist Leonard French.

Enter the Great Hall of the NGVI and you will always see people (of all ages) lying on the floor to gaze up at the stained glass ceiling created by Leonard French. It's magnificent. Even if you have only a short time to visit the Gallery make sure you head to the Great Hall to experience Leonard French's masterpiece.
