Al Forno has amazing food - from their pasta to their made-where-you-can-watch wood burning brick oven pizza!! Overall, the favorite Italian restaurant of my family and friends when they visit us in Esslingen. The only problem - the service is not so great...some days they are friendly and there in a reasonable time - other days, they seem to debate for 15 minutes whether they want to take your order at all. I have a hard time with that. Their prices at lunch for one of their 4 lunch specials are great (7 Euro), but any other item ordered incurs an additional 3-4 Euro for the small lettuce salad and the prices are somewhat high compared to other Italian restaurants in town. We have been there because of the positive comments we read on tripAdvisor (there were just 2). The atmosphere wasn't bad, but, being saturday evening, we expected a crowded place - instead it was more or less empty... The waiter could'nt speak English or Italian at all and his German was just understandable. It seemed as if it was his first evening at work. The food was good and abundant, even if we could hardly find the squids in the seafood salad...Overall the prize is too high for the quality and the service they offer
Al Forno is the real deal! They make their pizzas in the open where you can watch them and then slide the pizza into their brick oven. Great prices at lunch! Dinner prices are average. We go here regularly for the wood oven baked lasagna, usually on sale for euros, and the Chianti wine. Its difficult to get nice red wines at most German restaurants in this area. Here they pour a generous glass of very good Chianti at...a reasonable price. The staff are quiet but friendly and responsive.

We chose the place on Sunday late afternoon as this was one of few places open at 3pm . Good pizza, pasta at reasonable prices. Average service: u need to ask separately for parmesan for pasta, oil for pizza. I would go there again!
We sat outside in the heart of Esslingen to eat lunch. Lunch specials are listed on the board and excellent menu to choose from. Food was good, wait staff was patient with our bad German, and food was served quickly.
