Rather disappointed. In recent years, with the arrival of the owner/chef from a nearby restaurant, the food has been superb, as his cooking has always been. Sadly on this occasion there was something lacking and it just didn't have that extra mmmmmm. The portions were quite small, the roast potatoes missing that usual crispness and tang, the broccoli overcooked, with single piece serving of cauliflower and parsnip and shared veggie dishes which were really just single portions. The menu prices were in line with today's market prices so no reason to reduce the quality of the dishes too. Come on Anchor, we know you can do better than that.
I went to this restaurant with my friends for drinks and was rudely spoken to by the blonde bartender. Despite purchasing more than 6 drinks for 5 people, we were told we must buy 6 drinks for all 6 of us. One person in our group didn't want to drink and because of that, we were treated in a hostile manner. I have been a local resident for 15 years and don't often visit this pub. I recommended it to my friends for a relaxed evening, but I will not be returning after this experience. I was embarrassed by the poor treatment we received, especially considering I had previously recommended this place as a nice pub in a small village.
Absolutely love the food, staff atmosphere here. (Biased as a very local pub for us to walk to). Especially love the Thai curry (very authentic) and bang bang chicken starter…please please please put this on the menu permanently. Only one gripe (tiny one) but can you do a chicken caesar salad without the cajun spice. Seriously though, it’s great to have a local pub doing great local food in Canewdon again.
Wow! What a gem!! The seafood platter is enormous and just as good as served at West Mersea without the long drive! Very good alternatives on the specials board, and a good standard menu. WE WILL BE BACK! Good friendly service, this as good as it gets for a small local pub. Well Done and thank you!

Oh my goodness! This place is a hidden treasure!! We visited for Sunday lunch and the roast trio was absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere in the restaurant was cozy and inviting. The service was top-notch, attentive but not overbearing. We will definitely be coming back.
We're fairly new to the village, we find the pub and the Team there very welcoming and friendly. Food is great and a good selection of beers and ales, and all just a short walk away. We will certainly be returning on a regularly . Lorraine John.
This restaurant is amazing! The service and food are both great. There is a reason why we always return here. It is a lovely country pub. My little girl loves coming here and always receives a nice warm welcome. Thank you.
