Returning to the Barley Mow, newly reopened after various Covid restrictions, we were delighted at the reorganised spaces, both inside and outside, on one side favoured by the substantial wet trade, on the other a permanently covered dining area where there was once a large marquee. We chose the latter, rather than the internal restaurant, and ordered our Sunday lunches from the simple menu, offering a choice of meats, with additional sides such as cheesy cauliflower at an additional charge. Whilst waiting for our lunch to be served, I enjoyed a pint of the very good real ale available; my wife a large Chardonnay, and we chatted about the fact we were out to lunch for the first time in what...

Thought I 'd take a break from cooking for a change and have a nice pubgrub delivery. Found this place on just eat and thought we 'd give it a go (slight bias thinking it 's near Cowbridge, it 's in the vale there were always a lot of really good food pubs here) it 's only three miles away. Arrived promptly, unfortunately the chips were under cooked the onion rings were swimming in oil and my wife 's portion of scampi were soggy inside and out only just cooked. The piece de resistance was my cajun prawns coming in at £12.95 a pathetic portion of seven allegedly king prawns in a less than generous spoonful of bland tomato based slop masquerading as a sauce. No chips extra at £2.50 the prawns c...
Well maybe if you aren't prone to getting *The Pip* from sticky bars and there is not a belligerent local in the beer garden, this might be a good place to stop off for a half pint of something refreshing. Sadly, I am prone, and there was. I thought the Welsh were supposed to like the Scottish . I note that verbal bullying from the beer garden about the choice to wear a face covering inside the bar (current Welsh Government guidance) was not conducive to a positive first impression of the services provided within.
This used to be the one of the most welcoming country pubs in the area. Many evenings spent with family and friends. Food was always amazing as was the atmosphere. There was only 4 of us in restaurant, 2.5 hours later and 3 out of 4 steaks inedible disgusting. Will never go back.. such a shame . The waitress was fantastic. Felt so sorry for her being the go between… chef never showed face . It was also freezing.. talk about saving fuel costs .. uncomfortable and disappointing . Book a table now
My wife and have not been to the Barley Mow for a long time, obviously because of covid restrictions and prior to that because it was closed etc etc. I rang Colin reserved a table and went along, we were made to feel at home straight away by Colin, Sue and Steve the chef, the meal was very good (fish goujons excellent), very good value and overall a very worthwhile experience. Thanks to all the staff, Carol and I will be back!
We have always enjoyed dining at this restaurant, as the food is consistently excellent. However, last week we were disappointed to learn that the chef had unexpectedly left, leaving the owner to take on the catering duties alone. It was evident that managing everything on his own was a difficult task. We hope that the owner can find a new chef soon and allow for a brief break in service to regroup.
We had pre booked but still no sign of food after an hour. It was cold and the room looked unused and unloved so all five of us walked out. A restaurant with meals prebooked and offering roasts must surely have everything ready for the time of the first booking. This was a wonderful pub when I knew it as a teenager and on from the 60s through the 80s. Now rubbish.
I had an incredible night at this restaurant. I have celebrated New Year's Eve all over the world, but I have to say that this experience was one of the best. Thanks to Colin and his team for a memorable evening. Book a table now
I had the fish and chips and it was delicious. There was a great turnout for the quiz night and the Guinness was top-notch. Thank you!

"Popped in at 2.15 pm on a quiet Friday- asked very unfriendly landlady if we could play darts- she refused saying it is only for darts team to use and that tables were booked. Only table used was no where near the dart board."
