Bonsai is a bit different from your standard approach to Japanese dining - this place works the entrees on a share plate style, and only the main course is individual. This optimises engaging with the banquet choices (3 of) which works out cheaper than if you made a la carte choices; we chose the middle priced ($50/head) version which gave 7 entrees each, followed by the main (teryaki chicken, steak, eel). Entrees chicken salad, crab claw, sashimi (small), scallop, octopus ball, asparagus wrapped in beef....all very tasty.The venue itself is a bit of a featureless barn of a joint, so decor not its strong point. Licensed but can BYO wine Sunday to Thursday. Beer available, incl japanese beers...
I enjoyed my 21st birthday with 10 friends last weekend at the Bonsai and I'm so glad I chose it! The food was divine and we all couldn't stop drinking the yuzu sake jelly drinks .. delicious ! The highlight of the night though was the service from the wonderful staff who didn't so much as bat an eyelid when we lost track of time and ended up staying an hour and half after closing ( so sorry Bonsai !) . Thanks again Bonsai for a wonderful night .
This Japanese place was prettttyyyy yum! We ordered the aburi sushi, chicken katsu salad and duck gyoza. The chicken in the salad was so juicy and the wonton crisps complimented the salad so well. The duck gyoza was juicy and the dipping sauce was sensational. The aburi sushi was pretty tasty as well, except it took 40 minutes to come out.
Get the salmon sashimi bites. They are delicious. Also recommend the cheesy pork Katsu. A good dinning option for sharing with friends. Amazing customer service. Bonsai seats 175 people! It's very cool but a bit darker then I would prefer and the seats are oddly short & thats coming from someone 4"11.

Came here in a group of 6 and had the set menu. The food was fantastic, all the small entree dishes were great. Mains were also good, but I could have eaten the entrees all night. I am already planning my return visit.
What a fabulous place in a huge room right near Northbridge and second meal there. Mixture of Asian /Australian fusion and what a great taste adventure with amazing flavours and plates to share.

Absolutely delicious food! Great service and friendly staff! Good to go in a group so you can order lots of different items on the menu. You have to try the Chicken Salad.... So yummy!!!
