Don’t believe everything you read on here, the staff were brilliant and the service for breakfast was excellent. We knew it was likely to be quite a ‘lively’ place to stay while going to a wedding at the cathedral and frankly wondered if we had made a mistake when reading the awful reviews about staff/service. The staff/service couldn’t have been nicer, we only had breakfast and it was very good (and very cheap). First night we had a room on first floor and to be frank it wasn’t great right over the bar that is open until 1am. We asked to be moved to a second floor room for the second night and that was done without fuss..and a much better night of sleep was had! However, the High Street is...
My husband I stayed at The Golden Lion on 26th June for 2 days, we checked out today and we have only good positive views on it there was absolutely nothing negative about our stay. The staff were friendly thank you Shelden, Sherry and Nathan and all the other staff we didn’t get their names but were all very friendly and professional. The room was clean and spacious, the shower was a good pressure, and the food was delicious 5 all the way, best Wetherspoons we have stayed in. I met some friends who were staying at the hotel, they said the rooms were fine. I popped in for a couple of drinks with them whilst they were planning to dine, well it is a total mission to get served. Table Service in the restaurant was non-existent and there was a long queue for service at the bar, from a single bar person whose ability to effectively navigate the bar seemed beyond them. There appeared to be a lot of staff in the pub, none serving. I did not eat but there was a 50:50 good meal bad meal experience from my friends.
The outdoor seating area is plagued by pesky pigeons who snatch food from unattended plates and create a potential health hazard. The young staff members are polite but slow in clearing and cleaning tables, leading to unhygienic conditions. The indoor tables are also dirty and unwiped. The food quality is standard for a chain restaurant, and the service meets the target times despite being busy. However, if you are particular about cleanliness and hygiene, you may not be satisfied with the overall experience. Book a table now
The staff at the restaurant discriminated against my partner and me, refusing to serve us drinks within 5 minutes of our arrival because they claimed we were too drunk. Meanwhile, everyone else in the establishment seemed to be heavily intoxicated and engaging in drug use. The staff was unfriendly, aggressive, and rude. We had only come in for a couple of drinks before heading home, and were very disappointed with the service. We will not be returning to this establishment.
Place was a mess. We cleared our own table and ordered the food. Took 45 mins for mains to arrive and then another 40 mins for our desserts. Many other people were complaining of cold food and wrong orders. No signs of anyone in charge, a bunch of young kids trying to cope.
Stayed over night so had dinner and breakfast. Lovely rooms really good value as we were right in the middle of town. Great service even though it was a Friday night and busy. Breakfast nice too and you’d never have known it was packed the night before as lovely and clean.

It’s a Wetherspoons, you get what you pay for. The queuing system at the bar is a bit weird, but we have never had a bad drink or meal here. The staff are lovely, a lady called Sammy particularly, she’s so nice and friendly!
