My friend and I ordered gyoza for the appetizer and beef and chicken sukiyaki nabemono for the entrée. The fried gyoza was very soggy instead of crispy. It was also extra salty. The sukiyaki comes with a bowl of white rice, which feels unnecessary because nabemono already includes vermicelli noodles (not a complaint but an observation). The soup is sweet. I have never had sweet stew before, so I was excited to try it, but now I know that it's not for me. My friend got the chicken sukiyaki, and she thought it was decent. The place was packed, so we were seated at the bar. There are garages in the area and surprisingly they were all free so we parked in one of the garages.

Yesterday, my wife and I had a delightful dining experience at the Japanese restaurant. We tried the delicious Chicken Teriyaki, Salmon Sake Roll, and Dragon Roll. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was inviting, creating a pleasant dining ambiance. Moreover, we were pleased with the reasonable prices, making it a fantastic value for the quality of food and overall experience. We highly recommend this restaurant for a satisfying Japanese culinary adventure.
I've been dining at Tokies for nearly a decade, and we truly adore it. There are several reasons why Tokies appeals to us: 1) the salmon is consistently fresh and flavorful, 2) the rolls are innovative and distinctive, 3) the rice is cooked to perfection, 4) they offer a great variety of beers at the bar, and 5) the service is exceptionally friendly. Some of our top picks include the salmon sashimi, firecracker roll, and tofu steak.
If you're concerned about dietary restrictions, there are a few vegetarian options on the menu. The restaurant is also family-friendly, offering high chairs and plastic utensils for children. However, parking can be tricky, as paid street parking is limited. It's better to look for nearby public parking instead of driving around in search of a spot. Book a table now
The atmosphere is fantastic, and the sushi is delicious. However, on my first visit, the service was rather slow. During my second visit, though, the service improved significantly, and the rolls were great. One downside, however, was that the spicy tuna roll contained ground tuna instead of a whole piece, which I found unappealing.
Excellent sushi chef. Very courteous staff. Food is consistently excellent. Especially sushi and sashimi specials. Check the chalk board! Reliable standards, tuna, salmon, unagi. I love this place is so convenient in downtown SM.
I will absolutely be returning! The short ribs were absolutely incredible, and even the typically simple miso soup was exceptional. I also tried a couple of the signature drinks, and now I'm eager to try them all. Food: 5/5
The sushi bar leaves much to be desired. A wall blocks the view of the chefs, and its bright, distracting lights are quite off-putting. As for the food, I would rate it 4 out of 5. Book a table now
The food is outstanding, the drinks are wonderful, and the staff is both attentive and extremely friendly. This restaurant is a must-visit if you find yourself in San Mateo!
