One word! Oishii! This place served up some great Japanese food! Came here with two other friends because we felt like Japanese cuisine. It was a spontaneous decision as we had not heard of this restaurant before but we were in the area. To our surprise, after ordering and devouring banquet A- we left satisfied and in complete awe that we lucked out on selecting such a great restaurant. The food was a big thumbs up and cannot fault the service or atmosphere. Everything came out on time and was super fresh. Highly recommend
The service was fast, the food good, and the prices fair. The Udon tempura soup was awesome. We arrived at approximately 6 on a Tuesday. They were busy but hardly packed. The staff seemed reluctant to seat us, but the manager insisted there was space. It soon became clear why: within about 1/2hr the place was completely full. I suggest reservations. We were staying nearby on our last day in the Melbourne area. Tookaiya is a short drive from the MEL airport. It is worth the drive!
My wife and I first discovered this restaurant in 2000 and we have always tried to come back and have a meal here at least once a year.The food has always been delicious and there is an extensive menu offering almost every type of traditional and modern Japanese cuisine.I have yet to have an entre, main meal or banquet that hasn't been exceptional.On some rare occasions the service can be a little slow, but it is always worth the wait.Highly recommended.
Visited for a family celebration meal on a Friday night, we have been before because it had good food, plenty to choose from and arrived well presented. This time however, by the time the last dish was served, others had finished theirs, probably 20 minutes later. All it would have taken was a short apology or an alert, "I'm sorry, the duck will take a little longer", but nothing was said or done to give us a courteous heads-up.

We'd passed this place many times and never given it much thought...But a for a special treat I took my wife for an evening out...The food was fantastic, the service really good and I even treated myself to two different kinds of Sake!All in all a little hidden gem well worthy of a visit!
Took my daughter here for dinner on a weeknight. The service was good and friendly enough. Spring rolls average, gyoza good. The only complaint would have to be the accompaniment of bean shoots taking up space on an expensive dish of meat. A little bit of veggies wouldn't go astray.
Enjoyed the udon soup with tempura. Authentic Japanese food, the soup was a great change away from the constant western food, burgers etc. There's even sashimi, didn't try it though.
Tookaiya would be one of the nicest Japanese restaurants I've been to in a long time, fast service, super fresh and delicious sashimi, great quality seafood dishes
