Located on Bourke Street in Surry Hills is the latest venture from Chef Kerby Craig, Bar Ume, a refresh of the former Ume Restaurant. The space is cozy yet stylish; a painted mural of cherry blossoms is splashed across one wall and dozens of bottles of Japanese whisky adorn the open shelves. The menu features primarily Japanese-inspired burgers and sides and there is also an extensive drinks menu so you would be remiss not to sample a whisky. We tried the Mars Maltage Cosmo Whisky on the rocks and, boy, did it pack a wonderful punch. To start off our meal, we had the fried brussel sprouts with black vinegar dressing and hot chips with umami salt. Brussel sprouts seem to always get a bad rap,...

An absolute must visit. The food at Bar Ume is something really really special. We ordered the bacon cheeseburger and chicken katsu burger (a special) and they were both spectacular. I'm not normally a huge chicken burger fan but my oh my was this amazing. The crunch on chicken was unlike anything I've ever tried and all the flavour combinations were spot on. The beef burger is one of the most well executed, well constructed burgers I've had with every aspect working amazingly together. We also ordered the renkon chips and fried chicken as sides - both are delicious and make perf additions to the burgers (especially that fried chicken - definitely don't skip on this!). For dessert we tried t...
I popped into Bar Ume in Surry Hills on a Sunday afternoon and easily got a seat. I've been looking forward to trying one of their burgers. The menu includes burgers, Japanese food specials, sides and a range of drinks from the bar. I order the Ume burger that has a Beef pattie, Wagyu mince sauce, onion, tomato, Mayo and cheese. The meat was perfectly cooked and the burger was juicy with a perfect balance of flavours. The bun wasn't too thick and complimented the meat and other ingredients. I would rate this as one of the top 3 burgers in Sydney and can't looking forward to trying the Fish Katsu burger next time. The venue is more than a burger joint and definitely a place to go for a drink...
Had such a lovely evening at this awesome restaurant and highly recommend it to everyone. The food was tasty and very unique with a selection of fantastic small dishes to have on the side with your main meal. The Brussel sprouts were sensational and absolutely loved the renkon chips. I honestly thought the burgers were delicious, as they were fresh and extra tasty with magnificent soft buns. The service was outstanding, warm and friendly ????. All in all a wonderful experience ???? Book a table now
Katsu burger ninja!! Far away in the Surry Hills area this joint pumps out some mean Katsu burger and wings!! Come for the food and stay for the drinks. This restaurant is a Japanese insipred theme with great tapas style menu and burgers. Until next time ... Keep eating!! asianfoodninja.com
Burgers are delicious! The bacon cheeseburger (doubled up) is delicious and is perfectly proportioned. The chips are out of this world, they have umami salt which is ridiculously addictive! A nice, but not particularly varied, beer and wine list, but that's made up with the untypical types of drinks on offer! Will be going back frequently!
One of my favourite burgers in Sydney. Nothing short of an exceptional buyer experience. Karage and the different sauces were also impressive!
Great food! I went for the UME burger but got sidetracked when I got there They had a limited time EBI burger. Book a table now
Surprised we managed to get a seat on a Friday night, but probably because we showed up relatively early.

"My girlfriend really enjoys thirsty bird, but I think it's just average. The fried chicken is pretty typical, but the pickles stand out as unique."
