We walked in to Zizzi to get lunch on a rainy Sunday, as everywhere else in town was so busy. We were glad they let us sit upstairs as they were busy. The staff were efficient taking our order and getting drinks but when the starter came the pizza dough was raw in the middle. At first I thought it was might be the 'melting mozzarella and garlic ' but it was just lots of raw dough! I sent it back and received another one which was cooked but had very little mozzarella or garlic flavour. The pasta main was supposed to have crispy cheese and sage on the top but there wasn 't any. There was no sslt or black pepper on any of the tables either. They had run out of a coiple of deserts and the coffe...
I had no problem booking a table for 5 with a day's notice. For a Friday night in December perhaps the alarm bells should of rung! The waitress was polite and helpful and the atmosphere of the restaurant was ok. The reason for a low mark is the stone cold ravioli served on a cold bowl (which was taken back to the kitchen and clearly microwaved, as the tomatoes were rock hard in the middle when returned) The margarita pizza that was burnt underneath. The Gluten free pizza base that was not cooked enough in the centre (got cold quickly) and the small portion size of the hot salmon risotto. The 1 starter that was had, was garlic bread with onion. Booked a table online and received email confirmation. Arrived and waited at the entrance desk and basically no one came over. Eventually a lady did and seemed quite put out and questioned the booking so showed her the email. She took us to a table upstairs tucked away in the corner which wasn’t set up or clean. They forgot one dish which turned up 25 mins after everyone else’s in fact they gave it to a table that arrived after us and obviously who they were expecting. Not the best food either. Won’t bother visiting again. No people skills
I did not have a pleasant experience at this restaurant and will not be returning. We were seated at a table near the bar and kitchen where the servers gathered, constantly bumping into my chair and shouting over our table. While most of the food was enjoyable and our waiter was attentive, they had run out of mozzarella, we had to request cutlery, and the coffee machine was broken. It seemed like it was just an off night for them, but there are definitely better Italian restaurants in Colchester.

Additionally, the quality of the food was not up to par. Many items on the set menu were not available, and we had to pay extra for substitutions. There were no desserts or drinks available, and the sharing platter we ordered was disappointing. The cheese balls were overcooked, and the cherry tomatoes with balsamic vinaigrette on chilled bread were inedible. Overall, it was a very disappointing and ruined experience.
I visited Zizzi for some pizza. It's always difficult because my family has several allergies. The staff was very helpful and understanding. The pizza was tasty. The restaurant was a bit noisy. I would return.
I had a great time last night with the delicious pizza and beer at this restaurant! The pizza was absolutely delicious, topped with ham and arugula. Their huge oven was really impressive.
