This new and expanding fish restaurant has some pretty heavy-weight competition in the Fitzroy/Carlton inner city areas and so needs to be serving the kind of food that people spending quite a bit of money will want to eat. For many customers, fish is less likely have appeal if it is covered in batter and overlaid with chips, with a very modest salad on the side. Recently dined at Argo in their eating room. While we have had great takeaway the quality does not translate to a sit down experience. Service was not good, slow and confused. The bouillabaisse was tasteless, watery with a few bits of grey fish, a prawn and some mussels, and I had to ask 3 times for a spoon to eat it with, the spaghetti was tasteless and unseasoned and the other 5 dishes which came to the table were below average and the servings were bulked out with so much rice/ chips they looked unappetising. Surely too a glass is standard when ordering a drink!, rather then being expected to drink out of the bottle,
This food was revolting. Unfortunately, we were served under-cooked rockling, soggy chips and poor quality calamari. We have been regular customers and were happy to provide feedback in hope of a better meal next time. Sadly, we received a rude and abusive response from the manager who completely dismissed our feedback and referred to "weird callers". She continued to berate me and redirected us to the "Chinese up the road". This was a dreadful experience and we will never return to this shop.
Argo meets the expectation of what anybody would expect when dining out. It is so so boring these days, everyone is doing the same old thing BUT not Argo ! I really don't want to tell anybody about this place as I want it all to myself . Best in Melbourne. Even better, Argo has taken on the shop next door, which is even better more room no disappointments when you get there and no seating. Go Argo your the best.

I ordered the Jason's Basket for $21. I was a little surprised that the potatoes cake was a manufactured not fresh. The fish cake tasty and the tartare sauce lovey, but that is where it ended for me. My husband had the over cooked grilled tickling and a beetroot salad which was nice. There sadly are better choices on the area. The staff were friendly.
I have visited twice before for the special lunch deal - fish, chips and salad for $10.00 - great value with fresh seafood and worth every cent. Service was fast and efficient, with a friendly smile.We sat outside in the courtyard where it was quiet. It was very pleasant indeed.I look forward to returning with friends for dinner soon.
I'm a regular diner here and have never been let down. Great grilled fish, awesome chips and a good range of salads. Always fresher and crisper if you eat in.
We had takeaway. We ate a little and then we threw it away. Soggy batter and mushy fish. Crazy. They should spend a few hours learning to cook fish.
