Au bon pichet is one of three restaurants recommended by the owners of the gîte where we were staying and did not disappoint. I was keen to try quenelles de sandre and they are available as either a starter or main course, so I opted for the former, as did my companion. Then we both had chicken fillet with peas, pea mousse and a smoked sabayon sauce. But they saved the best for last. Dessert was a triumph: the Tarte of the day was finished so we were offered Torche aux marrons a delicious confection of chestnut purée, cream and meringue. Small, typical, winstub-type of restaurant with Bib Gourmand, well deserved. On the published menu quenelles de sandre, sauce matelote , but it was not available, unfortunately, it was the only truly interesting typical Alsace dish (sauce matelote) besides the inevitable, opulent choucroute dishes. The first course, a salad, was satisfactory, the maigre dish was tasty, the dessert a feast, a spectacular Vacherin . The name of the establishment is more than correct: the 0,50 ltr. Sylvaner in a carafe (pichet) was the best Sylvaner we had in the Alsace!

We ate in the little pavement terrace on a beautiful evening. Very pleasant, the food was decent but not overly impressive. The desserts were the best part of the menu. As was the very charming if slightly overworked waitress. I ordered a steak as I had been told by our hotel that the father of the chef was a retired butcher who sourced amazing meat. It was ok, but quite chewy, and the maitre butter was way too garlicky and I like garlic! Have had much much better. Good for a pleasant meal if you are not expecting too much.

The set menu for dinner was excellent. The appetizer, main dish and dessert were so fresh and tasty we could not say which one was the best. The wine package wines were a fine fit with the food. Service was friendly and professional a great evening with friends.
