We ordered a variety of dim sum and noddles to share which worked out at £45 a head (incl drinks). Whilst quite pricey, We don 't mind paying that much if the food is nice but most of it was bad quality. The pork shumai was disgusting and honestly inedible, the chicken feat in black bean sauce came out red in colour like it had been curried, furthermore the seafood had the taste of ammonia. We have been visiting Banquet for years but today is the last time we will visit. All I can say is that this reputable place has gone beyond down hill. We were a family group of 4 out for a get together. We ordered dishes off the menu rather than the set menu. We were firstly asked if we’d like prawn crackers to which we replied yes please, but had we known we would be charged £4 for the pleasure! What a rip off! We reserved the private function room at Banquet for my father's 80th birthday party this past Saturday evening at no additional cost. The personal waitress and her assistant were absolutely fantastic - very friendly, accommodating, and always with a smile. They took care of everything and made sure my dad felt spoiled. Despite the various activities we had planned for the evening, the staff remained attentive to our needs and didn't miss a beat. I highly recommend using their spare room for a party of 30 guests. Once a week, my father and I like to indulge in a meal out. I have been dining at the Banquet for many years, but in the past 6 months, we have noticed a decline in the quality of the food. The final straw came last Saturday when I ordered crispy chili beef. It tasted stale and appeared dark in color, indicating that it had been reheated. I sent it back and the manager came over, but instead of apologizing and offering a fresh replacement, he simply stated that they had a new chef. I won’t be visiting this restaurant again. The last two times myself and my partner had bad overnight reactions to all the MSG put in the food I felt like I’d been drinking all night, massive hangover banging headache, my other half was sick. This has happened twice now once when we ate in and more recently on takeaway. We haven’t experienced anything so bad with other chinese restaurants (if we go visit family/friends). It’s such a shame as the food is nice whilst eating it, it’s the after effects that have now put us off for good. If you’re not sure what MSG is, just Google it
Our 1st visit to Banquet and we will definitely be going back. A friendly relaxed atmosphere, with a mixture of couples and families in the restaurant and we were well looked after by the staff. Most importantly though, the food was fantastic (I would recommend the King Prawns in Chilli and Garlic), but everything we had was flavoured well cooked well. A must visit if you are in the Colchester area and looking for a great meal.
I went to this restaurant for the second time with my family from America. Our waitress was much more attentive and friendly compared to our first visit. The dim sum we ordered was great, especially the shui-mi which were larger than what we usually get at other restaurants. Kudos to the management, we will definitely be back next time we're in Colchester for a family reunion.
