Firstly to all the fans and fellow reviewers if this is a modern Australian restaurant then I am from Mars. I went to this place expecting modern Australian cuisine and the persisting flavor was French (aside from Pavlova on dessert menu) which was confusing throughout my entrée and main until I gathered enough evidence and nerve to ask the maître d about the cuisine. Color me not astonished it is a French restaurant.
And if anyone has any doubt because of the small fresh spring roll that come with the pork belly I challenge you to go to France and see how many restaurants serve spring rolls. It is even argued by some French chefs that the origins of the spring roll is German or French...

This restaurant is not prepared for a large party. Our wait was unacceptable and the food was not worth the time or money. From the last of our party of 15 arriving at 7.15pm we didn't get our entrees until 8.30pm, mains at 9.45pm, and dessert at 10.30pm. I'm also incredibly disappointed at witnessing my dessert at another table an hour earlier at least 2-3 times the size of what I received later in the night. The size of the portions spaced so far apart meant I left still feeling hungry, not what I would expect from a $75 meal. Truely a hidden gem in Avoca Street. This was modern French food at excellent prices. I had the Confit Duck Leg which was perfectly cooked. (Cost $29.00) My wife had the Braised Leg of Lamb which she said was superb. (Cost $32.00). To accompany our dishes we added Steamed Vegetables of the Day $9 and Pomme Pont-nuef Chips $10 which I though added to the Duck beautifully. Accompanying our food was an excellent Shiraz from the Pyrenees Ranges Victoria. The waiting staff were exceptional, helpful, friendly, quick and unobtrusive. we have lived in the area for a few years and always rely on bistro avoca to give us amazing tasty food and guaranteed value for money. however this time the food looked and tasted different. having read some review it looks like it has changed hands. what a pitt as the food was average and overly indulgent French without being high quality. I had the lamb which was tough and dry and tasteless and my partner had the beef Wellington which had a rind if fat through it and was also cooked badly. we unfortunately won't be recommending this place to friends anymore and probably won't go back.
HIGH END AND VERY AFFORDABLE!
I went with my partner for dinner and we had a massive surprise. Prices in the menu are really affordable and the food is just delicious. It is fine dinning at it's best, perfect balance of flavors and service. Everything was perfect and the front of house staff were very friendly.
Congratulations to the Chef and staff! They are doing an amazing job. Will go over and over again.
It is a warm, inviting place, almost like home. The service is friendly but can be a bit haphazard with the waitresses at a loss as to what they are doing or which tables they are responsible for. Food is wholesome & generous but some lack balance & finess. It is a nice place for an enjoyable, cosy & comforting meal.
