"Tried the ginger Creme brûlée tart, which was pretty great, except that the ginger flavour might come across as too strong for some. I wasn't a huge fan of it, but the flavour grew on me."

So I used to love BSB for its fantastic baked goods but now that it has infiltrated Newtown I say enough. BSB has just become another chain across Sydney like Messina, which has also migrated from the east and set up in this part of town. When you think about the ingenuity of Black Star across the road, the BSB line up looks particularly bland. I had a surprisingly soggy lamb sausage roll and an iced chai and I just felt like I was at a hipster Maccas. It is so typical of the mass market Sydney food scene though - one big identifiable brand becomes so popular that it proliferates, muscling out other players and killing imagination with it. So I blame all you foodies with your iPhones and she...

So I've loved BSB for his fantastic baked goods, but now because it has infiltrated Newtown, I say enough. BSB is simply another chain about Sydney like Messina, which is also migrated from the East and set up in this part of the city. If you think about the ingenuity of the black star over the street, the BSB line looks particularly FAD. I had a surprisingly muddy lamb sausage role and an ice-like chai and I just felt like I was on a hipster Maccas. It is typical of the mass market Sydney Food Scene - a large, identifiable brand is so popular that they multiply other players muscles and the imagination kill. So I accuse everything you have gourmets with their iPhones and the sheepmentality....

I was excited to see that Bourke Street Bakery has moved into Newtown now on King Street. It still is a reliable source of delicious baked goods! I found the service here to be lovely and helpful. I bought a range of sweet items including Pear Danish, Chocolate Tart, and Ginger Brûlée Tart. The danish had wonderful crispy puff pastry. The tarts had nice short crust base with delicious fillings. I also got a Beef Brisket, Red Wine & Mushroom Pie, Lamb, Almond & Harissa Sausage Roll, and Chicken, Sweet Corn & Shallot Sausage Roll. All these had flaky pastry. The beef pie had chunks of wonderfully soft meat in it with mushrooms in a rich sauce. The sausage rolls were really tasty.
