There can't be too many better locations in Melbourne than the corner of Sydney Road and Bell Street, the great arterial road linking the east and west of Melbourne. It's an unashamedly old-fashioned pub -- cold beer and good pub food at a reasonable price. I went in today for a beer and the pub was doing good business. The pub is well looked after and it has a number a private areas where you can have a quiet drink. By the way, look out for specials, you may get a bargain.
It is a Pokie and TAB place and even in the Bistro there is sport TV showing the odds and another showing the winning draws on the Lotto. That said, the staff in the Bistro are really good. They are attentive to the customers' needs and offer water, suggest drinks and menu items (but not in an intrusive manner). My experience was good, although my vegie burger was only ordinary (at least it was not served on a wooden plank like some places).
Brown's Corner Hotel is at the corner of Bell Street and Sydney Road, one of the most prominent corners in Melbourne, Its food offering is partially Italian and partially Asian, good solid pub food, with something for everdyone. The bar is popular, with 12 beers on tap. Happy Hour is from 5pm to 7pm. Brown's is a famous Coburg landmark.
Planned stop before going to the Pentridge Ghost tour. We were early and there was Happy Hour! Fantastic priced drinks, fantastic food (rib eye & barra) and super friendly and capable staff who made us feel welcomed and like locals! Good hangout, full of buzz .... on Poker nights. Modernly renovated inside, all the facilities you can think of. Drinks are well priced and quite good, however more importantly great atmosphere on the Friday night, which was one of their Poker night. Well behaved crowd.
Seriously, the biggest Chicken parmy I've seen. It was the whole double breast from what I could gather. The service was cheerful, bit of a wait on the meals to be delivered, but they were very tasty and fresh.
Food as usual was good. Fresh, tasty and good portion. Small menu but had variety for all. Waiting for food needs getting used to when they are busy. Staff cheerful that makes up for it.
I used to stop by here most Sundays after church because it was at the spot where I would change from the tram to the bus and it also had Coopers Pale Ale... Book a table now
Good spot for a cold beer, game of pool then a nice meal on the corner of Bell Street and Sydney Road. A good old style pub come meet the locals.
