Visiting Vila Real was initially just a stop on the way to Lamego. It turned out to be one of our favorite places in northern Portugal. Because it wasn’t in our plans we missed the lunch hour, but because they are primarily a pastry shop, they were open a little later in the afternoon. We started with some savory samosas, but their specialties is their sweet pastries. Their signature selection is the Crista de Galo which is a local version of the ubiquitous egg custard pastries in Portugal. Their version is lighter and has a bit more fruit flavoring than the typical pastel de nata and has won several regional awards. We sat outside eating with coffee and fresh squeezed juices while enjoying...

Rosa was generous and thoughtful with her time and deeds. She shared her stories of her family, handed down recipes, and educational background in studying connections between cultures and food. For example we discussed the history of the Portuguese settlers bringing the pastéis de nata tarts to the colony of Macau, where the recipe was modified by the British to give Macau’s egg tarts. We even had a chance to eat “Crista de Galo,” (rooster comb in Portuguese) fresh out of the oven! It was heaven with its flaky dough and egg and almond filling. We also had a taste of the special pudding made with 40 egg yolks! Please make this a special stop if you're in the area, you won't regret it!

We had a couples hand’s on traditional sweet pastries workshop. It’s an experience highly recommended with the added benefits of meeting the fabulous Rosa that Leeds a team of ladies preparing traditional pastries that are done manually the same way for decades.
