I had a little disappointing dinner in the night before I had no great expectations. it was a Sunday, everything else seemed closed, and there was hardly anyone in the restaurant, but we were met with a smile and a friendly greeting from our server. he helped us with the menu, I ordered almost a cold court without realizing it, so was glad when he directed me in the right direction. bier was great, my duck was absolutely luscious, and my man really enjoyed his gnocchi. Schwerin is a really nice tiny town. And it has lots of lovely places to eat and drink. Kartoffelhaus is definitely in our favorite places list. The interior is decorated again locally and traditionally, but not killing the guests with extreme details. Kartoffelhaus offers classical...German food with local touches. We had schnitzel and a fish dish. Both of them were of course served with potatoes, but not just simple, boiled or fried potatoes. They were perfectly prepared. This place can turn a no-potato person (like me into a potato lover.
We ate at the Kartoffelhaus during our recent stay in Schwerin. I had noticed it a couple of times, when passing by, as it was located very close to our hotel. We were there at Sunday lunchtime. The menu was varied and the claim...of potatoes with everything was not quite met. I enjoyed a salad with goats cheese and potato fritters and my partner struggled valiantly to finish his Kartofellauflauflauf portions were generous. Good food and excellent beer at a very reasonable price and a well-shaded spot on a very hot day!
While kartoffeln may be in the name, it is the meat that really impresses here. they didn't think about how we like it, but the steak brought perfectly. the mixed grill had pork, truthahn and bark (and speck) all cooked for perfection. the side. the kartoffels were a bit on the salty side for my taste – but we have irrigated the with excellent house wines both red and white! all in all a cold, professionally charming service combined with a beautiful atmosphere in the dining rooms and good eating. no English menus.

In almost every German restaurant I’ve eaten in potatoes are served as part of the main course. In Kartoffelhaus, they are the center of almost every dish. The chef can be very creative. The potato soup was an excellent blend of potato’s with some bacon....Really good. The potatoes served with the meat main dishes were outstanding. The restaurant itself is small and cosy . Perhaps not the best place in the hot summer we just had but it should be perfect this winter.
We visited the Cathedral in Schwerin and after climbing the tower, we had develop a good appetite. So we headed to the Kartoffelhaus Schwerin for lunch which was a more traditional lunch. The lunch was ok, portions were good. All in all, nothing to brag...about but good balance between price and quality. View from the small front terrace was the cathedral so location is nice.
we have completed our first visit in Schwerin in the kartoffelhaus and can recommend it. we had the salmon court and the kartoffel au gratin with gorgonzola. the kartoffel with gorgonzola was amazing. I want to go back. the restaurant is located in a very old building with a large ambiente.
Best food we had during our stay in Germany. They have gluten free options. I had sour pork and I loved it! A really cosy resturants with good service. They have the meny in english and helped my find gluten free options on The german...meny.
