La Grappa - Table reservation

The restaurant serves italian cuisine. The food was very delicious, the decoration somewhat garish. The prices were however very high, we paid more than euros per person, and the quality was good but not something you can not get elsewhere for considerably less money....The service was swift but pushy and arrogant. The patron, when asked if it was possible to have a glass of wine instead of a bottle, reponded in an contemptuous manner that he does not run a bistro. Afterwards he sort of apologised for it, offering the option of getting a glass instead of a bottle. I was recommended this place by a local, but was disappointed. The food IS good, but there are many places in Essen selling Italian food that is just as good or better, for a fraction of the price, and with larger portions. The wine is...pricey but very good. A cheaper house wine just isn't available. The waiter was a bit of a jerk as he said 'trust me' on the wine choice, then 'joked' or was it?! that it was only euros a glass. For the rest of the meal I wondered how much it actually was, before getting a more decent euros confirmed on the bill. While I can understand that some reviewers have expressed their surprise or discontentment about the interior decoration of this restaurant which apparently has not changed since the I can only say that the quality of the food and service has been top notch every...single time I dined at La Grappa. To me, La Grappa is still the best Italian restaurant not just in Essen, but in the area Saitta Vini and Amici in Duesseldorf and Villa Patrizia in Duisburg, for example, are also recommendable, but they are not on the same level. If you want the real La Grappa experience, you should avoid the times of the Restaurant Karussell, when the place is overcrowded with nonregular guests

Restaurant is located close to the railway station in Essen. Very classical and outdated interior many tables are in niches, with persons it becomes uncomfortable. The food is of an outstanding quality, fresh and great ingredients. Rather expensive, courses menu, no aperture small glasses of wine each Overall not a good value for money experience. If you like good Italian food and don't mind the outdated interior this is your place to be

We were desperate to find a place to eat after a long opera found this one and luckily they took us in. Had a great salad wonderful gnocchi a bottle of wine and a coffee each. Not cheap but totally worth it. Very...attentive service. Will be back
