I found La Voute by chance: following the languid voice of a tenor which resonated in the silent alley of leading up the the enchanting Citadelle de Calvi. There was no stage: sitting on the steps on this hole-in-the-wall a handsome young man with his guitar sang old romantic songs in the corsican language with unfeigned passion. A pretty girl sat at his feet, and looked at him intently: she clearly in love. I had to stay and savour the moment: I must say that I find the Place d 'Armes of Calvi one of the most atmospheric squares in the Mediterranean, with the crude volumes of the Foreign Legion 's barracks fronting the pretty cathedral. This music was the most poetic complement. I sat and o...

La Voute, La Voute what can I say about La Voute. First, that its setting high up in Calvi’s citadel is close to perfect with lovely views towards the cathedral which currently has a huge renaissance fresco on one of its walls (see pic). Second, that its website says it is open from 10am to 1am 7 days a week which is simply not true it was definitely closed on our first two trips to the citadel. Third, the chef arrives at around 730pm and doesn’t start cooking till much later. Fourth, he is a delightful fellow. Fifth, there is some truth in the tripadvisor entry that said what La Voute want is “a cool hang out for earnest young men with acoustic guitars and to occasionally serve some wine an...

I feel sorry for the guys who run this place. What they want is a cool hang out for earnest young men with acoustic guitars and to occasionally serve some wine and beer. What they don't want is to be faffing with customers who may want things (like serving) and focussing on food. We had a menu de jour which was truly awful and included over boiled courgettes, mushy carrots and a dessert which looked like baby food and tasted the same only much sweeter. The lads hang about smoking at the entrance of the restaurant until they are summoned to serve and don't bother clearing dirty glasses or empty bottles away. The inside of the restaurant was chaotic and looked more like a wannabe music studio....

A small room with 3 or 4 tables, a counter and a small kitchen, all under the vault that gives the restaurant it's name. It feels like eating at friend's home. The food reminded me of my childhood! The biggest surprise of all, was definitely the young servers suddenly becoming the most gifted singers! Traditional Corsican music beautifully interpreted with the sound of a guitar. Great moments to remember for a long time!
