Food is quite good. But there are other, fatal, problems. Reservations don't mean that. Arrive, take what is available. If only two persons, that can easily mean three feet from the door, or aside the hot pizza oven. Parties of four fare better and maybe their reservations are taken seriously. Space is small. Tonight was my fourth and last visit. Two years ago, reserved a table for our anniversary. Arrived, no table reserved, only the one by the door available. Turned on my heel and went to a better resto (Don Marco's), where we had a nice experience. Decided to give Matteo's another chance. Phoned early this morning to reserve, explained that I wanted a nice table, our anniversary again, no...
We were insulted 2 years ago on our Anniversary, when having made a reservation we were offered a table by the door which we rejected and left. The proprietor asked us to reconsider and give them an other chance. Again for our Anniversary (SILVER!) we were offered an other near the door table! A more suitable table was offered within the body of the establishment and we promptly got over the offense and dinner went reasonably well until I dared to order a THIRD DRINK to go with my coffee and desert; apparently 3 drinks is one to many according to our server and I was refused it on the basis of "It is the servers call." We promptly finished our coffee, ordered the bill, paid and left NO TIP....
April 2016I want to tell you a little story about my experience. I'm a little slow about how to get the word out but I never thought about trip advisor. We had a house fire and we found ourselves living in a motel. The first couple of days were terribly busy. Nothing was on scheduled it was later in the evening we found ourselves hungry. Driving downtown Welland I saw Matteo's. I had eaten there before and found the food excellent. My husband and I went in the door and I asked to see a menu. The owner said they were closed and I replied by explaining our situation and that we had not eaten. I just could not believe my luck. The owner said just one moment please. I've eaten at matteos 3 times.. all three times I've left dissapointed. Not with the food but the service . And the restaurant is very small . I got pasta the first time I went I ordered a pasta with add on chicken breast and specifically asked not for the chicken to be cut. Both times I ordered chicken with my meal.i asked for it not to be cut and both times the cook cut the chicken and absolutely killed it . ( not in a good way) it was like biting into a piece of rubber it was so overcooked and dry.cut into a bunch of little pieces. Thankfully the pasta was good. But that dosent say much how do you mess up pasta...Good luck getting a decent reservation if your getting dinner for two . Peop...
I agree with the other reviews - this little gem in Welland is jut wonderful, and really, should get more hype. The other night my husband and I went out for a date night, we had a nice small table by the wood fire.. I loved watching the chef in the open kitchen and the great wood smell throughout. The owner is clearly present, and you can tell! They also pour you a generous glass of wine which I appreciate, when most restaurants give you a dribble or $10. Service was friendly and prompt, ambiance was lively and fun and the prices are more than reasonable. What a great night out! Keep it going guys!
Make a reservation--there are not too many tables. Food and wine choices are good.We shared an app. two mains and two generous glasses of wine...all for about $60 Good value but especially when it is real food made from scratch. Had to wait a bit as there were two largish groups ahead of us...but it was worth it.Server was personable and kept a good eye on progress.Not too familiar with all the offerings in Welland but felt fortunate that after checking on Trip Advisor we made the choice for here.
This restaurant has it all. Fabulous food and service. The owner really cares as to how the customer likes his or her food. He is careful with gluten intolerant customers and the quality of the food is always top notch. We are looking forward to his new restaurant opening as well.
Dinner last evening at Matteos was excellent. Dined with friends at this establishment. Service , food was the best. We dined on Chicken Milano and Pasta with rapini and sausage. If you are in Welland looking for Italian food this is the place to go to.
A cozy restaurant owned by an excellent chef. Good portions with reasonable prices, and inexpensive wines too. Friendly and accommodating staff. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and Matt surprised us with amaretto drinks after dinner!
