We have enjoyed many wonderful meals at Peter Chang restaurants over the years, so we were looking forward to celebrating the early Lunar New Year at their location in Rockville Town Center. Unfortunately, this visit did not provide a promising start to the Year of the Dragon.
The positives: The appetizers were outstanding. The shrimp and chive dumplings were fresh and delicious, while the pumpkin balls with black bean were a delightful treat, almost dessert-like. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, making an effort to address an issue we encountered with the main course (details below).

Food was good, but a few stars taken off because the Chinese waiter with the glasses should be fired. He only served Chinese-speaking customers while we were there (I watched the whole time we were there and am Chinese-speaking myself but didn’t get served by him), and he chewed out the other waiter in front of the restaurant, sarcastically asking him, “you speak English, don’t you?” He was also very rude to a security guard who came in, getting his order wrong and was condescending to him to the point that the security guard left his money and the food and walked out. First of all I love this place! We ordered the scallion balloon breads, curry cauliflower, mapo tofu, general tso chicken, and three pepper chicken. They were all very flavorful and tasty. As you can tell I love to eat thing spicy and these guys made it really well. I wish we could have ate the balloon breads right away but because of pandemic it has to be take out for everyone's safety. But the taste was still good although shape changed later due to it being in container. I
This is some of the best Chinese food you can find in the DMV. I love Peter Chang's restaurants and I have been to this location many times over the years. We moved away for two years and just tried this place again after coming back to the area. There have been a few disappointing changes to the menu, but the food is just as delicious as ever. This is a review of our most recent visit this past weekend. We came around 12:30PM on a Sunday and there were lots of open tables.

I had loved Peter Chang since I was introduced to his restaurant in Richmond back in 2011. I have been to all of his restaurants in the Maryland (Rockville and Bethesda) and Fairfax area. This is truly authentic Szechuan cuisine and you would be a fool not to check it out at least once. And I always get the dry eggplant dish at all of his restaurants. I learned of Peter Chang back in 2020 while researching the best Chinese restaurants in the Maryland area and finally got to dine there in person last Sunday. The beef tendon and tripe was served in the most flavorful chili oil I?ve ever had. And that incredible flavor was consistently present in every single dish. The spicy shrimp dry pot being my absolute favorite. The quality of ingredients and cooking left me satisfied and content. Until my next visit.
I recently returned to the restaurant and the food is still exceptional. I hadn't visited in years, but when they first opened, the quality and consistency were outstanding. I'll provide another update after my next visit.
While I was disappointed with the food and overall service at Peter Chang's, I must commend the hostess for being exceptionally accommodating and apologetic in light of the chaotic circumstances. Thank you!
