Me and my husband visited this restaurant on the evening of our arrival (we've rented a house in the village Waltenheim-sur-Zorn). We were served by a very friendly lady who also happened to speak German and the food was delicious. We ate a salmon appetizer and then ordered two Flammkuchen, which were the best I ate so far (and we have them on virtually every street corner in Germany). Prices are okay if you consider France is not the cheapest country in Europe (around 10€ for each Flammkuchen, I think we spent about 50€ including the appetizer, beer/glass of wine and tip), but considering the delicious food and the impeccable service, it was definitely worth it! Bonus: The owner builds mini...

A stone's throw away from the Marne-Rhine Canal, this restaurant is a favorite stop for most canal cruisers. Our group of 20 guests was warmly welcomed by the owner's spouse: the local Meteor beer from 8 generations ago still produces a magnificent light and refreshing brew then came a succession of 5 different Flammekueche or Alsatian Tarte Flambee, a thinly crisp/chewy crust bread dough smothered with different types of cheeses (from creme fraiche, Munster, gruyere) then with toppings such as sliced onions, lardons or smoked thick bacon, mushrooms, vegetables but never tomatoes or tomato sauce. One of the better Flammenkueche in Alsace not to miss particularly this would be the last of the...

We were on a La Boat Houseboat on the canal and had left Hochenfelden from a tour of the Meteor Brewery and stopped to spend the night at the nice dock in Walterheim before the next lock cruising to Stasbourg. We found Restaurant A l'ancre 1 block from our boat. We had delicious Pizza,Calzone,Flammbees and schnitzel and potatoes. If you are in the area, this is a must restaurant and stop over. They open about 7pm like most restaurants did on this trip. The building and the staff were excellent. Look for the Hanzel and Gretel paintings on the building across the street.

I was on a Road Scholar canal boat trip on the Marne-Rhine canal and we had dinner her one night. The TARTE FLAMBÉE (Flammkuchen in German) were most wonderful. It is a flat bread with various toppings and we sampled 4 different ones. The food in Alsace is more German than French. Good beer from Meteor Brewery. Large Hop growing region. worth a side trip to Wingersheim to visit to Hop fields
