I just wrapped up another stop on the South Carolina BBQ trail, and this time I experienced authentic Eastern Carolina BBQ for the first time. It was incredible! The pulled pork had a fantastic vinegar flavor, enhanced by red pepper flakes. The "hot gravy" was delicious, especially over pork rinds and the pulled pork. I found the liver hash to be quite unique. I’m accustomed to the hash served down in the Lowcountry, so this version was a refreshing change. I enjoyed it, though. Schoolhouse's pepper vinegar-sauced pulled pork was awesome! I added extra sauce to it and hid the cracklins underneath to sop up some of that great sauce). They also have a great slaw to go along with it. The rest of the buffet is great but I'm here for the BBQ. They are cash only, $13 per adult) so come prepared, but if not there is an ATM onsite. The greatest strength at Schoolhouse and don't forget the BBQ is awesome) is their wonderful staff. Hats off to each of them, especially to Lynn Duke who made us feel like we were eating with family. In today's world of financial transactions, who would expect an all-you-can-eat buffet to only accept cash? It's manageable for a couple, but when a family of five arrives, it can be challenging unless you have $100 in cash on hand. The food was mediocre at best, and the staff's attitudes reflected that. They could certainly learn a thing or two about customer service and food preparation from Chick-fil-A. I wouldn’t recommend dining here.
My husband went to this place last week and liked it so much we decided to go back so I could enjoy it too. Awesome history, atmosphere is very homey and comfortable. Great selection of comfort food. Lots of new and different local cuisine. Really something for everyone. Debra is an awesome, personable server.

Great spot for BBQ buffet...old schoolhouse turned restaurant...the place is busy enough so that the food doesn't sit long. Pulled pork is southern vinegar based, smoked sausage and chicken tasty, as were the collards and tomato/okra dish. Cash only, lunch $13, well worth a visit.
If you don't like this place, there's something wrong with you. When we lived in Florence, we'd go at least 1-2 times a month. My son I are going to visit this summer and you can be sure we'll be stopping by.
Our Corvair Car Club has decided to make this are regular meet and eat. They have a separate room for events and great food. Very casual and convenient with folks coming from different locations an hour away.
Excellent BBQ buffet in Scranton! Although we don't live nearby, we make it a point to stop by whenever we're passing through and they're open.
