I normally go to a different Chinese takeaway in Arbroath, but after reading the good reviews on TripAdvisor for this restaurant, I thought I’d give The Golden City a go. I am honestly baffled by the good reviews that I read. The honey chilli chicken was unlike any I’ve had before- word of warning, it is not in a batter, nor is it in a nice, sticky and sweet honey sauce. It is in a veg-loaded, watery sauce.The sweet and sour pork balls were also not great. The insides were slimy, as the batter was undercooked. I will never return to this restaurant. The counter staff were extremely rude and unhelpful. I ordered spicy noodles, but received a special spicy noodle with meat in it, which was not suitable for a non-meat eater. When we called to address the issue, the girl we spoke to was rude and unwilling to resolve the situation or consult with her manager. After insisting, she finally spoke to her manager, who offered to make us a new order. We returned the special spicy noodles and declined the replacement, as the disrespectful attitude had completely turned us off from this place.
They do the big spring rolls, the ones that you can have a good chomp on. It has been my go 2 for a while as it has always been good. But the past couple of times things may just be starting to slip. May head somewhere else next time. Tried again had chicken chow main, chips, hot sour soup, deap fried shredded chicken in chilli garlic sauce and fried rice. It's such a shame really everything was good apart from the deep fried shredded chicken because it was burnt and the burt taste overpowered the chilli and garlic sauce. Unfortunately I won't be going back.
This has to be one of the worst takeaway experiences in Arbroath. The online ordering system was not working and there was no mention that they only accept cash. The nearest cash machines were charging exorbitant fees to withdraw money. The staff working behind the counter were rude and unhelpful. If you hate your job that much, don't work there.

Visiting Arbroath for weekend; checked the reviews of Chinese and saw this one was scoring high but with only a small number of reviews. Gave it a try and was NOT disappointed!!! Food was fantastic and portions very generous! Extensive menu; we had chicken curry, chop suet and chow mien. All lovely. Well worth a try
I just had a takeout for dinner and I must say, kudos to tonight's chef - it was absolutely delicious! It was the best meal I've had in a long time. I ordered the gluten-free chicken and pineapple dish, and it was fantastic.
The takeaway may look a bit worn and slightly naff but I really can't fault the food. It's consistently good and tasty.
Great food best Chinese in town great gravy and chips too will deffo be back for more open Christmas day
