After a long walk along the Thames path I 'd worked up quite an appetite for lunch by the time I arrived at the Ship and Lobster in the far east of Gravesend. The well filled interior proved it was a popular watering hole and lunch spot. Was greeted by a friendly bar maid who took my order of cod fillet and chips £9.95) and went outside up the steps to eat outside under the canopy. I had to wait a few minutes but it was well worth it and cooked to order as soon I was presented with a full,apetising plate of cod and home made chips with a colourful salad. Thanks for a great afternoon at your interesting, homely pub. We all had a fantastic time. We were made so welcome by all your staff. The food was very reasonably priced of excellent quality and plenty of it!! There were lots of ales beers to choose from. The decor reflects the fact it is right on the river and it's a very,very old traditional pub. We loved the fact that we were welcomed with our dog. (Because of this we spent longer in the pub! If we'd left her at home we wouldn't have been able to have stayed so long! Posh decor doesn't interest us,it's just walls. It's the people that make the place. Normally you might be able to get to the Ship and Lobster via the coastal path (I’m not really sure) but as part of it was closed we had a rather uninspiring walk past scruffy industrial sites and, to be honest, the pub itself is situated in a rather drab and dismal area. Having said that, although it is clearly overdue a refurb, we found it to be a most welcoming and friendly pub. The decor is old fashioned, but as I spent many years working in dock towns (including Gravesend 55 years ago), it suited me perfectly well, with its photos of old ships and boats. We are a regular small group of walkers. We arrived by car from our walk in Cobham, chosen as the reviews here were so good.Sorry to say we were very disappointed. The building is in a poor state of repair and the inside very scruffy with the dirtiest carpet I have seen for many a year. The locals were friendly as was the bar lady. The food quantity too much even for a large plate and my chips were poor (a friend nearby had different chunky chips which she loved! I was never offered a choice! Overall, so long as you go not expecting a 5 star pub and understand where it is situated you do get a meal and a pint, but go when you are hungry!

I am on a million step walking challenge for charity and today I walked 7 miles around the Gravesend and Medway canal ending up in the ship and lobster fir lunch . A well needed pint of john smith and a fantastic lunch . I had a Kentucky chicken wrap , spiced rice and coleslaw while Andy gad home made onions rings , jacket potatoes beans and cheese and we shared a fresh salad. We sat outside looking over the Thames relaxing. I love this pub ! Every visit over the years has been superb . A real Londoners pub in kent .
Wanted somewhere for lunch but didn’t know where to go but found this amazing pub on Trip Advisor. When we arrived it looked quite shabby on the outside and not great inside but overlook that because the food and service is brilliant. Food portions are massive and all home cooked nothing is warmed up. Will be returning again
Great little find right on the river. Excellent for a lovely pint and a meal. Excellent service and value for money. All staff are welcoming and friendly. We shall return!
