Amami Sushi is a casual Japanese dining spot that is most well known for their omakase set. There are multiple Amami Sushi locations, with this one being on the busy El Camino Real right by the border of Millbrae. They have a small parking lot just for their restaurant. The inside features several tables as well as counter seating by the sushi bar. I have dined here on multiple occasions for dinner as well as ordered takeout from here. The dining experience inside tends to be a bit mixed, usually depending on how busy they are at the time. Even if there is a table available, I have found that it can take a while before they clean it up and allow for seating. The same can be said after orderi...

First visit... The exterior suggests a mediocre restaurant hides within. But looks can be deceiving. As soon as we opened the door, the drab exterior revealed an absolutely hopping and large dining room with a long wait list. Good thing we called ahead in the afternoon to reserve a table. Service was a little perfunctory and hurried. But it's clear they're trying to turn tables quickly, so I guess that tracks. Food: Agedashi tofu: untraditional not brothy at all, but basically crisp fried silken tofu with a dipping sauce. Really delicious but not what we expected. Hamachi kama: good, but lacked the grilled flavor that often puts this dish over the top Various rolls: All very tasty and genero...
Even though we live close to an Amami Sushi, we always prefer to take the 40+ minute drive to this location. It can be hit or miss when it comes to getting a table (lesson learned), so we always make a reservation just in case. We once had a terrible experience sitting next to a loud group of men and women who treated the place like their living room, so we always opt for bar seating here. Plus, nothing beats having a TV right in front of you or watching the chefs prepare sushi. Most of the time, we go for their oyster shots (or the oyster special, which comes on a spoon), the omakase, o-toro, and seared toro with uni, although we like to mix things up. The parking lot fills up quickly depen...
Took my Valentine to Umami since sushi is his thang . We ordered Tai Carpacio (3/5) Just alright Truffle Ponzu Sauce. This was our fave. But, today, the sauce was too diluted. Norwegian Salmon (5/5) So so good. The fish was buttery and succulent. 2 pieces for $15 though. Toro with Uni (4/5) It 's pretty good. Never had uni before. But, they did a good job ! Romeo and Juliet Roll (2/5) Husband thing the black roe was a bit fist. I think it 's okay. They added Sriracha on top. Man... that ruined the taste completely. Melt in your mouth toro. I cant rate this at all. See below. We started with Agedashi Tofu: Delicious and had a good crunch. Then, our sushi order did not come until 45min later.... Book a table now
The sushi was fantastic as usual, with each piece fresh and melting in my mouth, showcasing an excellent ratio of rice to fish. Their nigiri never disappoints, and the rock'n roll roll had a nice bite thanks to the eel. However, I found their special roll, the melt-in-your-mouth roll, to be just okay. Although it was very tender and did indeed melt in your mouth, the flavors didn’t meld together well due to an overload of ingredients. As for service, I would give it a 4/5. The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring quick service. In terms of value, I would rate it 5/5. Most sushi entrees are in the mid to high $20s range, while the beef teriyaki entrée was $18. Each entrée included miso...
This was my first time going to the original Amami sushi and I was very pleased. It's a bit smaller than the one in South SF so I can definitely see it being busier at peak times. I came for dinner on a Thursday and my party of 4 was seated right away. Service was fast and efficient. We got the sushi deluxe as well as the chirashi. All the fish was very fresh. Also want to note that the bathroom was EXTREMELY CLEAN, like hotel/resort level clean. Not sure if it was just cleaned but reading other reviews seems like a norm. Just something to mention since I don't see this as often at other restaurants
Passed by and had Amami Sushi in my bookmarks. I was able to try it on a Saturday night and it was fairly busy with people and to go orders. The lover boat was indeed a lot of fish and looks nice. But again quality is lacking. The Philadelphia roll was mainly cream cheese. The sliced ginger was old and fairly dry. I'd say if you want cheap-ish and not so great quality but big pieces of fish then try Amami. The service was good and you get a lot of food. But the quality is lacking. They have multiple food and health violations . They have a small parking lot and street parking

I used to really enjoy this restaurant because they offered fresh fish at a reasonable price, but I've noticed a decline in quality over the years. On two occasions, we had to wait an hour for our food because they focused more on takeout orders than on diners at the tables. If you're still interested in Amami, I would recommend checking out their nearby location, as it provides quicker service and better quality food.
