If you're after a lovely, warm, inviting, tasty, meal in an ambient, well decorated, friendly tavern; don't go here! After driving up to Mount Wellington today in the snow (the first weekend of snow this season in Hobart, Tasmania) we had visions of a beautiful, warm tavern with roaring fire, a bottle of red and a magnificent steak. We ventured in, frozen to the bone, and asked for a table for 12 (7 kids and 5 adults) but we were abruptly told no. I asked why and the waitress (wearing a snow jacket and a scarf because it was so darn cold) just said "we are too busy".I looked around and saw at least 4 vacant tables and re questioned her as to why, bc I could see many tables available. I thoug...

This old icon of Hobart settled in bushland below Mount Wellington used to be a must visit place for locals and tourists. The Tavern has just changed hands and to be fair the new manager had been there 3 days on our visit. Our group of 14 booked for a set lunch. The service was good. The house wine was very plain and wine drinkers should seek a better one. Our roast beef was terrible and several of our group had to order steak knives to cut it. In these days there is no excuse for serving tough beef. The manager offered us free coffee as an apology for the poor meal. The decor is very old and tired and needs at least painting and decorating in a theme to suit the wonderful location. I hope t...
I came at the beginning of summer, on a weekend, as there was nowhere to eat around the area (unless you drive all the way back to Hobart, which is really a ghost town itself).Inside was quite dark, although it does have view of the mountain / valley if you manage to get a table near the windows. I sat outside at the front door of the pub instead, which was actually quite nice, as it wasn't too busy. I imagine that this could be annoying when the pub is busy and people walking in and out.I ordered a fish and chips. It was actually more than acceptable, and the price was average.I don't have any problem coming here again, since there is nothing around, and the food was OK.
My partner decided to take me here for dinner on Mother's Day. We booked ahead and told them we would have the seafood platter - so it was served really quickly after we arrived. The food was great - salt and pepper calamari, battered flat head, crumbed scallops and scallops in creamy garlic sauce served with chips and salad. The lighting in the room was very dark however and the tables very plain and ordinary. Some interesting photos decorated the walls and the combustion heater made the place warm and welcoming. I absolutely adored the new menu at the Tavern. The food was the best it has ever been. We indulged ourselves because it was just so delicious. The customer service was excellent, the food was served promptly, and the wine menu was impressive. The Tavern has been revitalized with a fresh look while still maintaining its charm. Kudos to the new management, we will definitely be returning.
Called a mountain Schnitzel - bigger than you can imagine $29.00What a meal. I could not get through it all so had to take a "Doggy Bag" home for 2 more meals Well worth the $29Other party members meals looked small in comparison but where in fact good size meals. Will definitely be back
The decor is a bit dated and it is pretty cold inside BUT the hostess was delightful, greeted us promptly and took our orders. The coffee was pretty good but the fries were the best chips I have had in a LONG time. Big serve. And gluten-free. Doesn't get any better than that
Great pub. Nice small town pub feel. Good beers on tap. Catch up with your friends by the fire. The chips and wedges are great. But it's not really a restaurant so don't go here if you're expecting a good meal. Book a table now
Had lunch there, service was good, food was average, but big servings. Calamari I had was a bit leathery, but others had burgers which were okay.
Thought we slip in for a nibble around lunch time and what a feed we got. Ordered a small cheeseburger, and got a monster.
